Is it just me, but I recall from Warpstock Europe that Mensys mentioned that Chris will take up and continue (or at least release his work to the public again) his work with his multimedia classes?

I really hope that we soon see something new from Chris again in the near future. Or i might just be so totally wrong, but I sure don't hope.

I for one would be willing to see it continue development - even on a payware basis - perhaps even a package based on both CW-Multimedia and his widgets package and WPS_Wizard combined.

Perhaps if enough people show interest in his work instead of bitching to him if things don't work right (instead of asking for help) he may change his mind. I personally hope so. From his work, I've been able to create special folders for both multimedia objects and images (not talking about the player folders, but actual disk folders to store the actual files in) that show the multimedia object's info (Name, track, genre, etc, playlength, bit rate) so that my MM folders actuall have sensible info in the details view. And since he did all the work and even offered explanations in the accompanying files, it was a very simple matter on my part with no real work other than following his instructions.

I've barely even begun to play with CW-MM's REXX capabilities yet, but what little I've tried is an additional, impressive addition to what the sum total of his work can do. Cris, if you are reading these posts, I'm one (of probably many) who do appreciate your work - regardless of whether you decide to continue it - my thanks.

AFAIK the CW-Multimedia classes has been embedded in eCS and the future development of these classes will be exclusive in eCS regi.

That wasn't my take on it. When people installed CW-MM, a lot of systems broke, not due to CW-MM itself, but because there was something else wrong with their system itself. Once cleaned up, CW-MM worked fine. When that was sorted out, most people stopped blaming CW-MM and Chris and plenty of defenders.

Of course, the people who had it broke had to go public to ask for help to find out what was wrong with their system, but for whatever reason, Chris took it as bitching against CW-MM.
(Everything's on Google, so I'm sure those interested can check the threads).

I for one would like to see it continue again, of course, but it sounds unlikely.

Hi!
Recently I've found somewhere CW-Multimedia classes V0.2.9 dated as 21.03.05
but I had not need to replace my wonderfully working 0.2.7... so can't tell if it improves anything. But anyway it seems be still developed as a part of ecs.

Sure I will also like to see Chris W continue CW-Multimedia classes. I will love if it can be an open source netlabs project.

CW multimedia classes (as well as AudioCDCreator) are project at netlabs - you can check out the sources with CVS.

You can also find entries for both projects in xtracker.netlabs.org. It seems, however, that the sources were last owrked on in mid 2003, so a 2005 version would surprise me.

Cheers

There has indeed been continued work. There has been at least a version 0.2.8, and pre_0.2.9.

From 0.2.8:

V0.2.8 (01.11.2004)

-Icon view removed for media folders.
-Icon view page removed for media folders. This removes it also from CD folders which never supported icon view anyway.
-Compact view improved.
-Track information in switch list and titles.
-Opening of Media folder wasn't possible when settings already open.
-Fixed a memory leak for image files.
-Fixed deadlock when copying image files in light table folders.
-Background bitmap deletion of image files to give memory back to the system.
-English distribution included german help file for the classes.
-Audio objects stopped playing after a second if not started from a folder.
-Workaround for WPS crash with Timidity. No, It's still not working with the classes.
-Fixed possible crash with abstract objects in light table folders.
-Fixed CD querying for LVM systems (not for dynamically attached USB drives yet).
-Audio file scanning now stops when folder is closed.
-No scanning for CD tracks.
-Video player didn't work at all.
-ID3 info for artist was overwritten with the album name when using setup strings.
-Trap when Quicktime for OS/2 was installed during scanning of MP3 files.
-Marking image files as invalid for the WPS when caused a trap.
-Only create thumbs when image is visible in container. Esp. useful when WPS-Wizard is installed.
-When first creating ID3 tags the genre was always set to 'blues'.
-CD objects are no longer created automatically. This will fix most lock ups people experienced.
-Slide show program for displaying the contents of one or more directories

There is no history entry for the pre_0.2.9 version, but the file dates are 3-21-2005, as OSW pointed out.

I do not think that Chris wil continue this work. I have asked him some weeks ago to provide me with the latest version available. He responded that version 0.2.7b was latest public (English) version which I could use. I have compared this version with the version in eCS 1.2 and found that the eCS version is much newer. I have mailed him again and asked about this version. Unfortunately, he does not respond any more. (

It would be nice if somebody could compile the sources in the CVS or provide me with that magic V0.2.9 version. I would like to integrate it with UpdCD.

Okay, that's terrific. Would someone mind posting a link to these updates?
It's not obvious to me where it is at Netlabs. I've looked all over the page and the FTP server.

Thanks

Hi!
The name of file we are talking about is cw-mmclasses-pre_0_2_9-eng-dont_spread.zip.
So if you catch it somewhere then you are lucky man. If you don't - there is no easy way to share or spread it without permission of author.

This is why it is important to formlize it with an Open Source License. That will give us the rules of how can we distribuite it and how to use it.

Is an Open Source license set on the netlabs CVS for the CWMM project??

Martin,
I don't think Netlabs accepts a project if it's not open source.
On the other hand, I don't think Chris is updating the Netlabs CVS anymore... but I may be wrong.

Bye

Hi,

The CW-MM classes are *not* open source nor will they.

If there is/was a public CVS on netlabs for the source than it's because of a misconfiguration/misunderstanding/whatever of some kind. I asked the maintainer to remove any source which may still be on the server.
If anybody downloaded my sources I kindly ask herewith to delete these sources because they were aquired without permission.
BTW these files are older than the last release of the classes.

I consider any unauthorized use of my work (sources) as a violation of my copyright.

There will most likely no public release of the classes in the future for personal reasons:

http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/mmclasses/mmclassesmain.htm

Feel free to use the binary release available on Hobbes.

Regards Chris

Hi Chris

I was one that had great success using you MM classes. I was sorry to see that your pulled the plug on them. I can understand your reasons though. Everytime someone had a problem, it was easy for them to blame your MM classes, although they could not prove it.

I just want to say thanks for what you did in the past and for the allowing your classes to be added to eCS 1.2. I have seen no one blaming your classes for any problems in eCS. Hopefully you will continue to allow your improved classes to be used in eCS.

Thanks!

Chris W.

I, too, would like to say a BIG Thank-you for the tremendous effort you've put into your wonderful MM Class replacements. I use them all the time and shun the idea of using OS/2 without them.

The integration in eCS 1.2 is welcome and saves me having to install them myself-which I have always done in the past.

Too bad all you have for your hard work is bad memories of angry abuse.

Maybe if more of those, (like me), who have found your class replacements useful, had spoken out and said "thanks" it might have lessoned the loud and hurtful words of those that did strike out.

Chris...

I apprectiate your work; thank-you.
