1. os/2 warp 4.0 installation help |
|
|
| i tried to install os/2 warp 4.0 on a 586. the install seemed to go just fine, but when it was done and rebooted it just displayed 9999's over and over again...filling the screen. my friend said that it was likley due to the pci bus. he said that os/2 was designed to use isa bus, and that with computer that have pci the hard drives run on the pci bus. don't know if this is true, but i plan on try9ing it again with a 500mhz 786. are there any rules of thumb i should follow or be aware of? an if some one could point be in the direction of a hardware compatability list i would be greatful, as well as were to download some fixpacks? thanx |

| Hey Boy, Your friends advice, although well intentioned, is wrong. OS/2 runs on PCI hardware fine. As a matter of fact, PCI came out before OS/2 Warp 4. What you probably need to do, is upgrade your OS/2 install disks to allow it to see large hard drives. If you could, please state your system specs, so that real troubleshooting can begin. |

| You can also use Daniela Engbert's HD drivers. You will find them on hobbes, they are free, they are perfect, and they support a large scale of harddisks. A general note: Everyone with a harddisk larger than 8G *must* patch the installation diskettes for W3 and W4 with HD drivers for big disks. The drivers are all what you need. FDISK, FORMAT and similar programs will work once you have the right drivers installed. |

UpdateCD is a tool to update the installation CD with the latest fixes and other useful tools and applications. It's at <http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm>. It does have some capabilities under Windows. I don't think the full function can be used, but, at least enough to update the disk drivers.

You can't. You can pull an ISO image off of any CD-ROM, as you probably know. In order to patch OS/2 you'll need a running OS/2 system. Once you have a running OS/2 system, you can patch then use the UpdateCD program to create a "patched" OS/2 Warp 4 media. However, to be up to date, you'll need IBM Passport Advantage to get all the latest up dates, as they are for paying customers. If you are a home user, you should be using eComStation (AKA eCS). IBM is focused on the big dogs as you may have heard. To install to your large hard drive, you'll need to update your install diskettes as mentioned previously in this thread. Using UpdateCD will bypass floppies, however you need a working and patched OS/2 Warp 4 workstation to begin with. CID is the way to go with multiple installs. You may also want to look into RIPL. Search engines such as Google can be helpful. Be sure to have your *ss covered with enough licenses. |

easy way use the update package 2 for warp4 install, you can use win or *nix for creation. All features are listed on the page, send me a mail if you need some additional information. http://www.os2usr.org/w4bootcd.html |

last updated at 04 Jul, 2005 00:02 (1 times) Hi Mike,I'll stand corrected on doing this with Windows (or Linux), however the URL mentioned isn't too clear on how this should be done. Perhaps streamlinig the page with a step by step section readily available somewhere obvious to the unkeen eye, otherwise a great resource. I did know about the Golden Code URL, however, it did seem to be for a working OS/2 system. |

its no matter, the procedure they descibe does not work. I have went through every step, tried modifing the batch file that does the work and figure it out myself, and still nothing... I also emailed the page author but never got a reply. I gave up. Minux was even easier then this. I'll buy a small HDD, install it on it, fix it, burn a real one (if it recognises my burner) and then post somewhere down the line. Otherwise, unless he replies, I've had enough frustration for a bit |
