1. Content Manager for OS/2-eCS?

http://www.joomla.org/ "Joomla! is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla! is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable. "

http://drupal.org "Drupal.org is the official website of Drupal, an open source content management platform.

Equipped with a powerful blend of features, Drupal can support a variety of websites ranging from personal weblogs to large community-driven websites."

These are two open source content managers for web sites. Is there something similar for OS/2-eCS or should there be a 'bounty' for porting them to OS/2-eCS?

While I have never tried Drupal, I currently run Joomla on my OS/2 based web server and it runs fine. I just unzipped it, configured it, and it works.

Looking at Drupal's requirements, there should be no difficulty getting it to work under OS/2.

Essentially, all these need are the following:

-A web server such that can work with PHP such as Apache, Web/2, etc (I currently use Dink's Web/2 on my server machine)

-PHP 4.3 or later (I'm currently running PHP 4.3.10, although Paul Smedley has ported PHP 4.4.x and PHP 5.1.x)

-MySQL (Drupal claims it can work with PostgreSQL too, both MySQL and PostgreSQL have OS/2 ports - I'm running MySQL 4.0.18, although Paul Smedley has ported 5.0.24)

On my own server I'm running the slightly older releases of the above, mostly because that machine has been running for a long time without any trouble and I havn't bothered to take the time to update it (also, I don't want to break anything). You can find the latest Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and PHP releases (along with a pile of other useful stuff too to have on a web server, such as ImageMagick) at:

http://smedley.info/os2ports/index.html

On the other hand, if you'd like the older releases you can find them at:

PHP 4.3.10

Apache 1.3.33 (also contains a build of 2.0.53):

MySQL 4.0.18 or 4.1.7 (and earlier builds such as 3.23.x):

I've used [color="#009900"] Mamboand then Joomla after the split, for years.

I've found it works as well under OS/2 as under any OS, but any version of it is far from good.

It's bloated, buggy with flaky extensions and deteriorates over time.

It will last longer if you don't use any of the non-included extensions, but deterioration is inevitable.

I still use Mamboand Joomla under two or three websites, but only on the less active ones.

Generally speaking, out of the one's that I have tested, (and I've tested loads over the years), the best CMS is the one with the smallest footprint. The more complexed it is, the more problematic it will be.

HTH.

I have to agree, while Joomla does offer some worthwhile features, there are things that I don't like about it.

Out of interest, what is your prefered CMS?

Well, that depends on what the needs of the website are.

Right now I still, as I said, have Mambo on one and Joomla on another, and Tiny Portal w/SMF on another site that has low content requirements for the front page, most of it being in the forums.

I was in the middle of testing new CMSs about three months ago. Then I also started moving and updating Apache/PHP/mySQL/Hybrid/Dell PowerEdge when suddenly! and without warning! my free time dropped off. So the rollover has been sloww... leaving me with some half implented CMSs in the midst of switching over.

However, to answer your question, right now I'm trying out XOOPs, e107, and TYPO3. Those were the ones I had whittled the selections down to.

There are sh*tloads of them out there that will run on eCS/OS2 , but most of them are simply put, just crap! or too early in the development stages.

Those few I mentioned above, seemed to hold the most promise according to the docs, reviews and samples/demos.

Agree with Ben that there are loads of CMS system out there - some works fine and some don't. Another question is also is it a pure CMS system that you asking for or is it a community driven CMS system. For example here at OS2 World we are running with a old system called News Publisher - plain simple CMS system without any extra features. But, if you would like to have a more community driven system you need to look at the more complex system.

Agree also that Joomla is far from perfect and I hope that version 1.5 (when ever they are there) will give a new and better work flow. Since it's kind of stupid how it works now. Tried Typo and didn't really like on how it worked. Drupal is very nice, but lacks plugins.

I would suggest that you figure out what you want to do from user perspective. What are your needs. And based on the needs match it against the various CMS system available.

A great site to check out different CMS system is OpenSourceCMS.com.
