1. I am having problems installing warp 4 |
|
|
| I can't seem to be getting past disk 2 The system has two hard drives one a two gb, the other a 6gb the 6gb has Ubuntu on it, the 2 GB is empty. There is a Sony brand CD burner on it. 1024 GB ram, and an AMD Sempron 3000+ Processor, it give me an error that one program has gone into a problem and cannot continue, it is with the bus master IDE program, so I dunno how to fix that problem. should I turn it off and disconnect one HD then install or what should I do? |

| You may want to remove some RAM to have less than 512MB. Those diskette images have still the older OS/2 kernel in floppy 0. After a successful OS/2 installation, you can apply a new kernel and/or fixpak 15 to your OS/2 and can add the RAM that you removed. Please, ground yourself so that you will not accidentally zap your RAM with a static zap. Additionally, there have been some very detailed posts from other OS/2 users in the forum regarding this topic. Do a search for more on the installation of your OS/2. Good luck ! |

| I have 1 GB in the system, I could switch with my main PC, or take the 256 from the one, then install it that way, then see if it works. Which site should I do a search for the most updated kernel install disks in order to avoid problems with installing Warp 4, I accidentally trashed my ubuntu installation. |

| The RAM is new, 1GB DDR Ram, but I thought of something, how about if I install it on one PC, then move the hard disk over, (I know Windows 98 doesn't mind that) OS/2 warp 4 may be different, it could work, I have to check my CD drive I think it had problems reading the CD, as since I had it in the drive but told me to keep on inserting it, I think what I remembered doing was I ran the CD install program on the disk to get things started but I don't remember, I may use a different CD drive for install. |

Hypr (21 Mar, 2007 01:50): The RAM is new, 1GB DDR Ram, but I thought of something, how about if I install it on one PC, then move the hard disk over, (I know Windows 98 doesn't mind that) OS/2 warp 4 may be different
Your WinXX reference is still DOS based, Warp 4 --nay, even Warp 3-- is more advanced than that. Accordingly, IBM never supported an OS/2 installation on one machine's hard disk to be transfered into another machine --unless both were identical in motherboard, devices, etc.. Some people have done it on disimilar hardware but that procedure introduces instability variables that will come back later and chomp at you --your data. Consequently, that is not advisable and (doing so) simply reflects "That ineptitude for [OS/2], which is frequently [not] the fault of us scholars." --Tatler. Hypr (21 Mar, 2007 01:50): , it could work, I have to check my CD drive I think it had problems reading the CD, as since I had it in the drive but told me to keep on inserting it, I think what I remembered doing was I ran the CD install program on the disk to get things started but I don't remember, I may use a different CD drive for install.
Do not mess your primary machine. You can get a couple of 64MB and/or 128MB new RAM sticks for less than $20.00 on auction sites. As long as you note carefully the specifications for RAM of your second machine, those can be used to attempt the OS/2 install. With that minimum investment you will save yourself many headaches potentially resulting from two unusable machines. Now, with that issue behind, is your CDROM device in your second machine giving you read problems You were not specific about which machine's CDROM you were talking about. Additionally, it would help if you were not so vague about "remembering." Installing an operating system requieres that you exercise the discipline of writing down the exact wording and context of the errors that you experience. Again, there is a lot of literature pertaining to installation of OS/2 in this forum contributed by other members. Familiarize yourself with that to avoid common issues and avoid asking the same questions that were answered long ago. Cheers ! |

| >how about if I install it on one PC, then move the hard disk over I've done this many times with positive results. Video driver was the main problem. When using scitech snap this should be not an issue any more. Revert to plain vga before swapping the disk and you are on the save side. Sometimes the config.sys needs some tweaking, especially when moving an installation from a desktop to a notebook. But most times it simply works when you swap the disk. If network drivers are installed, you probably have to change this afterwards. But that's not a big deal - there's a change button in mpts.exe. Maybe it's a good advice, do install a soundcard driver not one the first run, but afterwards in the target machine. For Warp4 (a pre LVM system) you have to take care, that the bios drive numbering must be equal. Without LVM, OS/2 relies on the drive letter which is assigned by the mainboard bios. This is usually no problem for systems with only one harddisk jumpered as master on the primary IDE channel of the first IDE controller, but get's complicated with more then one drive or if you connect on a second IDE controller which are found very often on modern motherboards. |

| After doing some tests, I have concluded that I have a bad copy of it, I will have to search out a good copy as the CD image presumably is missing some files so that means that I should just reinstall Ubuntu then wait until I get Warp 4 (again) or EComstation. |
