1. eCS on a Thinkpad 600? |
|
|
I have tried to install eCS 1.1 onto my Thinkpad 600. It does not get past the part where it identifies the hard drive. The TP600 has 159 megs of ram, a 4 gig hard drive and a 233 mhz cpu (pentium II). It can boot from the cdrom drive. I tried checking the memory with the onboard test but it just froze up. Could it be the memory?

| I had ECS(1.0 and 1.1) installed on an 600E without any problems. Might be there is a hardware defect... |

The test (part of the setup) said the systemboard was okay. I will try the memory that it came with to see if it is the memory. It might even be the hard drive. I will try to find a different one for it. What is the size limiation for hard drives for the 600?

Unfortunantly there are a few different mainboards used on this system and I do not know if they all contain the same hard drive controller (though I assume any using the same bios should) I have a 20 gig, a 8gig and a 4gig for my 600e, and I have installed a 40 into my friends newer 600e without any problems.

| I am pretty sure the hard drive it came with is not good. I have older Thinkpads but their hard drives are too thick for the hard drive slot in the 600. I will try to find another hard drive thin enough for it and give it a try. I found some hard drives for the 600 at http://www.3klix.com but they were higher than I wanted to pay. I will check out http://www.ebay.com and at a local computer show/sale (one is coming near me a couple of weeks from now).

| Dunno if this helps, but I have an older TP600, and to get WSeB to install, another OS/2 user told me to go to IBM's Device Driver Matrix and download the newest BIOS and drivers for most of the subsystems. After installing the newest BIOS, the install went fine. HTH, -Robert |

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=TPAD-MATRIX The driver matrix for Thinkpads was gone but I read that they are back. The above is a link that I found at http://forum.thinkpads.com (they have an OS/2 section there too [it was in the general hardware section - IIRC). I will find and download the driver and install it. Thanks for the information.

| Do not use eComStation default install boot options which uses the high performance IDE drivers. Change to "use own option/settings" and use IBM IDE 506 in compatibility mode (ie non-DMA mode). | I will give it a try. I tried the IBM driver matrix for the Thinkpad 600. I went to download the driver for the bios but the java applet would not load. I tried downloading from a Win pc with the same result. I have Java from Innotek installed.

I tried it but now it does not get past an error message. It goes to the 'test' part of the cmos. It shows an error number of 174. I have another hard drive ordered. I will try to find out what 174 is. I also ordered (eBay) the driver cd for the Thinkpad 600.

When I go into the test section of the cmos, the icon for the hard drive is grayed out. There is a hard drive in the notebook computer but it shows/indicates it is not there. I will try to re-insert it and try using the hard drive I ordered. I will return with the results.

| The new(ish) hard drive for the TP600 has arrived. I have installed it. The hard drive tests okay in the cmos/bios test section. The hard drive icon is not greyed out. I finally was able to download the bios driver for the TP600. It was sent to me by Stuart (thanks, it is appreciated). I unclicked the 'download director' at the IBM site/section that had the bios driver for the TP600 and was able to download it (after a few weeks of not being able to). I will give it a try. I also downloaded and created a disc and diskettes for DFSee. The diskette were for DFSee general, DFSee for DOS and DFSee for OS/2. more updates to come.

I can not seem to boot anything on the TP600. I have tried FreeDOS. It has to be in 'safe mode' before it boots. I have tried installing FreeDOS but it stops at scanning the hard drive (even though fdisk and format seem to work ; fdisk supports fat32 but format /s does not work even though it does format it). I have tried ReactOS from http://www.reactos.com but it does not get very far before it stops. I have tried eCS 1.1 but it stops at the eCS logo. I have tried booting to FreeDOS safemode and install the bios update via an external diskette drive (internal cd drive) but it just reads the diskette continually (the diskette drive light goes not and does not go off till either the notebook computer is turned off or the external diskette drive is disconnected). I tried booting the bios update but stops at boot and does nothing. Sometimes it would reboot but the screen would be blank. I can only reboot it after disconnecting the power cord and taking out the battery. I am beginning to see why it was up for bids at eBay.com. I have tried the memory it came with and the memory I have (the former is about 97 meg and the latter is 163 meg). I will keep trying.

I was able to get ReactOS to install. It was too late (at night) to try eCS 1.1. I will be trying that tonight.

It did not install. I set it to 'oldcdrom' and it got a little farther than the eCS logo. It went just beyond that where it shows the drive information and just stops. I will keep trying.
