1. Modem/Internet Dialer for OS/2?
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
Does anyone know of a good modem software and/or internet dialer for OS/2?

PS I am looking for one that could support a PCI modem (I saw one at http://www.zoomtel.com that is supposed to be 'software independent' - controller being on the card [I sent them an e-mail asking if it supports OS/2 and am waiting for a reply]).

The absolut best software available is FX Communications InJoy dialer. Check out http://www.fx.dk/. The dialer offers You Dial On Demand among other and modem sharing. FX Com also have a nice firewall for OS2. Great company and software.

Injoy dialer and PMLinks might make a good combo (?) What do you think?

InJoy dialer is just not a simple dialer, guess that you've figured out by now. I used to use it before I went over to use an ISDN-router (D-Link). If you have a local LAN at home and have the need to share the modem betwen the different system this would be the ultimate solution.

But, regarding pmLinks I don't know what it is!?

I believe PMLinks is a version of Links for OS/2 (a command line/text internet browser) with a graphical user/presentation manager internface. I read about it in a discussion group (I think both can be found at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu ).

Okey, I thought that it would be the Links but I couldn't find it on Hobbes when making a search for pmlinks, nada. Well, links yes of course this could be used together with InJoy dialer. The best thing I liked with the Injoy Dialer was the Dial On Demand (DOD) feature. Using this the the dialer will contect to internet when needed and you can also have to disconnect after a period, I think I had mine set to 10 minutes or so

PMLinks is suppose to be the PM (presentation manager) version of the text browser links. I will try to find where I found it and bring back the url.

I've tried and used for fun the command line version. So if would actually be fun to try the pm version. But, actually I would go for the CLI version if I had to pick one of the two version.

Have you tried InJoy Dialer yet?

I tried InJoy dialer in the past but it didn't really work for me (found it a little confusing). I will give it another try.

pmlinks-20020519.rar pmlinks-20020519.r00
These two files are on my hard drive. Once I find a way to unzip/unrar them, I will look for a text file that might have where it was downloaded.

PS I have been told that the lattest version of Links supports graphics (found at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu ).

I copied this from a file in the .rar 'zip' file ( a readme file). Another file says it is a Links browser with a pm shell.

"19 May, 2002

Here are OS/2 binaries of prerelease version of links browser
with support for graphics/pmshell and javascript.
EMX runtime required.

Run:
links.exe -driver pmshell

For more info see

Are there any dialers that will detect or check to see what modem is being used and/or attached? I have a pci modem. I have instlled the sio drivers from Gwinns site. I can not open the settings from/for the AT&T Global Network (they bought the isp service from IBM and still have support for OS/2 [the dialer has not been updated since sometim last year - IIRC]).

I have used the setup feature in the ATTGlobalNetwork dialer to try to detect the pci modem. It did not detect it. Is there another dialer that can dectect a pci modem? It has settings on/in hardware manager.

I tried it but it does not seem to have a feature where it detects the modem (I am hoping it could detect the pci modem I have). Is there a way for it to detect modems on ones computer?

InJoy or any other dialer won't detect an internal modem unless you have a driver for it. If your PCI modem is a Lucent based one, you might be lucky, as there are OS/2 drivers for some Lucent based modems, though they are usually used with the internal modems in laptops. There are Lucent drivers on hobbes.

I installed the lucent drivers from Hobbes and the SIO drivers from Gwinn. It set the internal modem as com 3 and it detected it (via the pci detect software that I downloaded from Hobbes) as a Lucent modem. I was able to dial out with it and it connected with my isp (used the dialer provided by ATTGlobalNetwork [their my isp]). It connected but it would not 'validate'. The 'validation' timed out and it disconnected. In a way it worked and another way it did not. I set the com and other settings in SafeFire but did not know the 'dialing string (IIRC) to put into it. I will try again.

Ok, since you are able to call out and connect it would be the connection script that might need an update. Try to check with the manual or at AT&T faq's for how to set up OS2 or any suggestion how to config another dialer. Also, the AT&T service, would this be the old IBM service that AT&T bought from IBM ? If so, most of the times you used the software that came along to connect to the network and this included software for both OS2 and Windows.
