1. Recomendations for large format printers / Plotters for OS/2 |
|
|
| Hi can anyone recommened a modern printer that will work with OS/2 under virtual PC? I am having problems trying to find one I can buy off the shelf that comes with OS/2 drivers. Some fo the older HP Large Format Printers come with OS/2 drivers, my question is has anyone had success installing an HP LFP possibly using an older driver? Must be colour and must be Parrallel port not USB. Any thjoughts..... |

| Look for the printers that offers network connectivity; this will solve the printing printing problem using VPC and make it much easier from OS2. Even if there is no proper driver that might be a similar that can be used and configed from. Also I'm using a HP2800 A3 printer under OS2 where there actually is a new driver for. But, since the printer offers PS-emulation I can print to disk to create a postscript file that I copy to the printer. So looking for a printer with network connectivity gives some more possibilty of getting it to work under both OS2 and Windows or any other OS for that matter. I've tried earlier to get USB printers to work under vpc and wmware but that didn't turn out that well. Don't know what the current situation are currently now; can anyone enlight on this topic |

| Make sure it's Postscript unless you are sure there are Warp drivers. Another consideration for large format is large capacity ink resevoir systems - they can cut banner print costs down TO 10% of the normal cost without the ink system. Also check the model's availability of special inks - many large format printers support different ink series that you can switch depending on what you are printing (ie: photo, UV Resistant, waterproof, dye based, etc). Much the same, check the media availability and margin size (some large format printers will print on thick canvas, vinyl, cloth, plastic sheets, etc... and check margin size as some models waste a lot of paper - as much as 2" left and right). Hope that helps, Rob |

| Hi Thanks for your help. The problem I am finding is that no-one is still supllying OS/2 drivers with their printers. Most companies I ask dont even know what OS/2 is. I am sure that some of the older HP drivers will work but have not been tested by anyone. Does anyone have a new technology plotter/large format printer working with OS/2? If so have the used the IBM generic plotter drivers or used an older HP one thanks again...... |

http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prn "The win32prn project is designed to use Microsoft Windows 2000 printer drivers on the IBM OS/2 platform family with the use of the ODIN emulation technology.". Could this be used with this printer (the DesignJet 130?)?

Well, when looking at IBM OS/2 Driver section following older HP DesignJet has drivers available for OS2. So the question for HP would be if the could identify any of following as close match to the designjet that you're looking for: DesignJet 200 DesignJet 2000CP DesignJet 220 DesignJet 230 DesignJet 2500CP DesignJet 250C DesignJet 3000CP DesignJet 330 DesignJet 3500CP DesignJet 350C DesignJet 430 DesignJet 450C DesignJet 455CA DesignJet 600 DesignJet 600C DesignJet 650C DesignJet 650C v2013_109 DesignJet 700/PS DesignJet 750C Plus/PS DesignJet 750C/PS DesignJet 755CM For example a number of the newer HP lasers can use without any flaws the older drivers to work under OS2. Maybe features such as duplex won't work. But, not an issue in your case |

If sixteen and a half inch will do, I highly recommend the Epson 3000. I have been using it for years with excellent results.

| Think I may have found a way round this, I tell OS/2 to print to the old Plotter that is disconnected. This then places a spoll file in c:\spool I can then open this file in a graphics program called embelish, save it as a jpg and then print it on whatever printer I want through XP.... Seems to work for what we need.. Thanks for your help.... |

| Well, a workable workaround; but have you tried to ask HP if there is any of the earlier HP printers that would close to the newer models? If there is any of the older drivers that could work out close enought and you want to share the printer in a mixed enviroment is to attach the printer to a small printer server unit (I've earlier used a D-Link 101 for lpt printers but there are newer units that works with USB as well). |

| Good Point however when I called up HP "technical Support" in the Uk they said that they only manufactured the printers they didn't actually provide technical support for plotters. This was done through their specialist retailers. Chocolate tea-pots spring to mind.... |

| Okey, kind of odd... we're happy to sell the equitmen to you but we can't help you... Okey, suggestion is to enter HP online forum and ask there if anyone can help out with this question. Same problem goes for the linux community regarding driver problem. I usually get better help from other HP users than from the HP support.... |
