1. OS/2 and GB network.....

So, now I have a solid OS/2 base, running my day to day works and so forth, I have come to notice that enough is not enough..

Here's the story. I have a OS/2 box running eCS 1.2 and a Intel Pro 1000 NIC. Actually, a Pro 1000 on board. Well supported and updated to the latest level.

On the boot, it detects as a 1000Mbps (impressive, it is) connection, and the signal seems to be very clean. I have a few more devices with 1000 NIC, and was one day sending files around those devices. Also I am using 1000 switching hub from buffalo for SOHO. (8 port, but has 2 processors on board)

I have found out that the max speed was around 15~20MBps, (yes, translates to around 150~200Mbps) measured. Of course there are a lot of issues that should affect this, even like disk defragmentations.

Out of curiosity, I tossed around one large file from one machine to my OS/2 box via FTP. It was from XP (NTFS) notebook to OS/2 (JFS with 128 cach specified) and max I could pull was still 20MBps. So fiddling aroud the TCP/IP setting and others, I found the OS/2 MTU was set to 1500.

Now, using Intel's 1000 driver (ver 3.61), is there a way or possiblity to use jumbo frame (or large block) feature for GB NIC's on OS/2?

It would be nice if OS/2 can use Jumbo Frame featur for much faster transfer between such devices.

Not sure exactly what you mean by the "Jumbo Frame" feature, but you can play around with the Receive Window Size and Send Window Size in TCP/IP. These settings often show some of the biggest improvements that I've found on SOHO networks.

Type INETCFG /?

from a comand prompt to see that it'll do. you might need:

inetcfg /? | more

Type in
INETCFG -g tcprwinsize
INETCFG -g tcpswinsize

to see what the receive and send window sizes are, and you can change (increase or decrease) them with:

inetcfg -s tcprwinsize <vallue>
inetcfg -s tcpswinsize <vallue>

Hope this helps

Well, maybe it's inte;'s marketing phrase.

Jumbo Frame to let TCP packets to have bigger size than default 1422, up to 4K or even 9~16K for frame size.

My above experiement was done doing FTP, and not netbios, which is not the best way to toss files around. Well, since I am getting faster speed than plain ol 100Mbps, I am still cool, but it's never bad to have more speed..

3.6x is also an older version of the driver. Intel's website has a 4.xx version available for download - don't know if its any good tho!

Moby.
