1. OS/2 FTP client timeouts??

My company has about 400 OS/2 servers, we are trying to implement
a REXX script that transfers data to a UNIX FTP server at a scheduled
time each day.

The transmissions go well for about 2/3 of the systems...but the folks
who manage the UNIX FTP server suggest we need to increase the
"timeout" for the OS/2 FTP clients (so if the FTP server is trying to serve too many clients at once...the OS/2 system will continue to try to make the FTP connections for an extended period of time).

The files themselves only take seconds to upload...maybe 2 or 3. So
is there a way for me to script retries or extend the length of time
the OS/2 FTP clients will attempt to establish the FTP connection (i.e.
FTP -timeout 180 HOST USERNAME PASSWORD, etc. to try for a full
three minutes to make the connection)??

Thanks in advance

Hi,

AFAIK there's no such parameter to the OS/2 FTP client. I checked the help texts and there's no trace of such stuff - unfortunately.
The best approach in my mind would be to either wrap a script around the ftp or to get an alternate FTP client with improved functionality.
We had a thread soem weeks ago about FTP return codes IIRC and I mentioned an advanced free alternate software... but I seem to have forgotten what is was called. Damn. Sorry. If you are able to retrieve my mail check the program, I'm sure it provides you with such features as timeout...

Hmm... maybe the "timeout" doesn't only affect FTP but the entire TCP/IP stuff in OS/2... which means that it *could* possibly be set somewhere else. Let me see if I can find that somewehere... BRB.

Greetings
Thomas

Thanks for the feedback - indeed, the posting from a few weeks
back you refer to - was a request for help with the *very same*
task we are engaged in. Got most of it squared away, but now
I suspect we are flooding the UNIX server.

I have found usenet refences to the FTP client inheriting timeouts
from the TCP/IP stack. It seems that in the OS/2 help guides, the
TFTPD server has a "-timeout" option, I don't know if that means
a client's inactivity timeout??

We are running OS/2 Warp Lan Server Adavnced 4, TCP/IP 4.02r
- and using alternate FTP clients (or upgrading the TCP/IP stack) is
not something I think we'd be empowered to do...we have a
pretty locked down environment, and introducing any type of new
code is not unlike getting a new Supreme Court judge approved

We might wind up having to re-initiate part of the script, i.e. "if
returncode=1, then...". But I'd welcome any other suggestions...

Thanks much...!

Hi,

it's me again. Okay that "timeout setting somewhere" just has turned out to be ... wrong. I found something else instead:

The TFTP command.
Apparently it supports a timeout parameter.

Note that according to what is stated in the OS/2 help, the TFTP does not list files nor is able to do user authentication and can only be used to transfer files. 1 at a time (no "m"put or "m"get...).

Maybe this helps (?)
Greetings

Hi,

oh shit! I seem to have mixed up client and server side of your problem. Okay... just to make sure I understand right:

You are trying to send a file from OS/2 to UNIX?
In this case, TFTP might solve the problem... but as the TrivialFTP (TFTP) uses UDP instead of TCP I'm afraid you'll have to have a TFTPD (the server) running on the UNIX machines in order to be able to use it.
Because of the security restrictions of TFTP (compared to FTP) I'm afraid "they" won't let you.
But anyway - don't take my words for granted, I'm not a "unix guy".

Greetings
Thomas

Oh yes indeed, OS/2 FTP clients and Unix FTP servers...

I had originally suggested that TFTP be used for this undertaking, do not recall if/why it was not considered...

I see that when using OS/2 FTP servers, you have a default of 200
threads allocated as a default...I would suspect this means you
could deal with 200 incoming connections (providing you had the
avail. resources on the server). Perhaps the Unix guys need to
tune their servers to handel this kind of traffic??

Thanks again for the feedback...

You could always use ncftp on the OS/2 machines - which may provide better compatability with the Unix server.

Ahhh! YES!
That was the name I couldn't recall! NCFTP!!
Thanks Paul.

Thanks for the input, guys - we convinced the mainframe guys to make
some adjustments on *their* end, to accomodate more connections.

Sure appreciate the terrific feedback, though!
