1. Help configuring a Xircom Card with IBM Card Services
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
Hi everyone,

I currently bought a xircom card at ebay, to be more precise i bought a RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 RBEM56G-100.

i now trying to configure this card with os2.

after some trys i only manage to put this card to work with this configuration:

BASEDEV=PCMCIA.SYS /R:500
BASEDEV=IBM2SS14.SYS /D /IG0=2

however i have a problem with this configuration i can't remove the card and insert it back in. in this case the card will not work afterwards.

also if i hibernate my laptop, after the restart the computer the card will not work.

so what i would like to know if any one manage to put this kind of cards working with ibm socket services in a diferent way.

best regards

Luis Meira

Luis,

I have the same model of card. This is my 3rd Xirom card and afaik, they still don't support card/socket services.
However these services are required for insert/remove the card while the computer is running. I have no solution to this problem. This is quite stupid, as the realport models occupy only one pcmcia slot but their connector panel blocks BOTH slots so you are forced to remove the card if you want a second card although only one slot is in use...
As for the standby problem: I know there is an optional parameter that you can supply either for the socket driver (ibm2ss14.sys) or for the card drivers ( don't remember exactly) which tells it to ignore the "power signal stuff", keeping it running all the time.
Sorry for not being able to help more.

Greetings
Thomas

Luis,

when it comes to network adapters and OS/2 I generally would check for any 3COM devices, as they seem to work quite well. You might check with Dr.Martinus' Notebook/2 site... there's a wealth of information on such matters:

The Xircom driver is very badly coded, and it also looks like
a port from windoze (win16 stub on the header?).

It does not support Card Services, Power Management (suspend etc),
running both the Ethernet and the Modem at the same time, and
many other features.

Xircom is the worst pcmcia card you can get for os/2. I've got the
same one. Also, its woth mentioning that there are many OEM
re-branded Xircom cards which use that same driver, some of them
are IBM ones, and they have the same limitations.

A few years ago someone at Warpstock Europe told me that
IBM wanted to re-write the driver (for the IBM cards anyway)
but it would work on the Xircom as well (since its the same card).

Apparently that never happened since ibm has been killing all
the os/2 related projects.

3Com cards are very good and the drivers seem to work well, but their existence in general is sorely lacking. Any newer 3Com card (including all 10/100 models, IIRC) will not have OS/2 drivers, and 3Com has taken the very aggravating step of removing the drivers for their older cards from their web site archives, so your only option is to find them on, for instance, Dr. Martinus' site. When you can find the drivers and don't mind the card just being 10Mb, however, they are a good choice. I have a 3Com card I use in my laptop and it supports card/socket services including full suspend/resume and hibernate without needing to do anything special.

I use this adapter on my compaq LTE
I use reserve.sys for the req. /340,8 /IRQ:10
and IBMss04.sys because "14" won´t load.

I had to use PCCard to have it recognized. No hibernation !
And to turn the modem power on I sometimes need to HOT swap the card.
For LAN support : I rem out the modem drivers.
As said, It´s very unlikely you can use modem and lan at the same time. (I did extensively test this.) So have 2 config. files to boot from.
(alt-f1 screen)
When it works, all goes well.
