Unfortunately a lot of ATM machines seem to be switching over to Windows. Within the last year or so I've seen quite a few ATM's either crashed, or which came up with some type of error message requiring you to click "OK" to get the system to continue... it is difficult to click "OK" when there's no mouse...

Yeah, that's a Wincor-Nixdorf ATM that almost all german savings banks use. The same machines were running OS/2 for years and I never saw problems... Although I can't really read the output, it seems like that's from a java exception handler... heck, if the atm software is running in java, then it was really a bad move to use windows. Unfortunately, with IBM support contracts for OS/2 based systems not being prolongated by big blue, the banks HAD to change to... something. And finding a support partner for eCS or linux was VERY difficult at the time when banks needed to find a solution (2-3 years ago IIRC). Greetings

Using Win to run ATM's makes as much sense as having brail on the ATM keypad. How are the blind going to know what the little screen is asking for? I have yet to see an ATM with a speaker or an head phone jack.

Yes, crashed public computer terminals running on Windows is something I see often recently. Do you know the automates in the Deutsche Bahn (German Train Company) trains? At least half of them don't work - often you can see a crashed Windows 2000 but newly they "solved" the problem by switching them off which safes power after all. btw: Does anyone know whether it is possible to do a practical/temporally limited job at the German Sparkasse where I can do *some kind* of OS/2 system administration/fixing/programming task? They still have a lot of OS/2 machines... Robin

It's just quite sad to see how OS/2 is loosing the ATM market for a inferior solution. I just say that based on the same words of a bank representative. "When MAX (MAX Federal Credit Union) moved from the OS/2 operating system to the advanced technology of Windows, we quickly realized that the system required closer management than our previous systems" ha... advanced technology (?) Ref: http://finanzen.net/news/news_detail.asp?NewsNr=412026 I think Serenity System should try to make a deal with Wincor-Nixdorf, Diebold and NCR to promote eComStation as the preferred (or at least alternative) ATM operating System. There had been a lot of OS/2 ATM development and it should be easy to just continue it under eCS. To sad I don't see Serenity moving forward on that direcction.

It is funny how something which requires more management is seen as "advanced". But it does explain a lot. After all, when the report is "the system is running", and then a month later the report is "the system is still running", and then 6 months later the report says "the system is still running", and then after a year or two "the system is still running, and we havn't had to reboot it since the day we turned it on", this makes for pretty boring reports. But when the report is that you regularly have to fix problems or install new virus data files or patch bugs, then that's more exciting! And therefore it must be more advanced.

It also keeps people employed. How many IT Professionals are going to force themselves onto the unemployment line when they can sell a solution that forces those they support to keep them around while basing their decision off of MS's promises of their OS being the most secure and most advanced? -Robert
