1. Error in Obtaining Driver Parameters? |
|
|
I created installation disettes for eCS 1.1. The program to create them was on the cd. I started the Thinkpad 760EL. I have an external (made for this model) diskette drive. It has the interenal cdrom drive. The installation stops at 'asking for drive parameters failed'. Does this mean the 760EL is too old for eCS 1.1? I have OS/2 Warp ver 4 on it (with fixpak 15). With Warp ver 4, it sees the cdrom drive. Could it have something to do with the diskette drive being seen as b: instead of a:? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

| Why don't you switch Boot from device in BIOS. |

| Don't think that the 760 can boot from CD; guess that is why he is forced to use the installations diskettes. But, I had some odd errors when installing version 1.2, so wild guess here, but I had to create the installation partition in advance using either Partition Magic (using version 5) or some older OS2 boot diskettes such as from Warp 4 or MCP/ACP. |

I tried to swtich boot in the bios but it does not support booting from the cdrom drive (the cdrom drive was not listed as one of the bootable drives when setting up which to boot from in the bios).

| I suspect that "drive b:". If W4 saw your CD drive then eCS should see it as well. But there can be some scripts on the boot diskette, which contain "drive a:" encoded firmly. A boot diskette is usually "drive a:". 1. Is it possible to make your diskette be "drive a:"? If it is then make your diskette "drive a:" and try again. 2. If it is not possible then check the boot diskettes for possible scripts and see whether the scripts don't try to access drive a: instead of drive b: somewhere. |

I will try them both. Thanks for the information.

When you have a fcc cable with 2 drive connectors you should connect the other one. I wonder if setting b to a in the bios actually keeps working after the driver is loaded... It could also be that ecs is changing form b to a somewhere during load.. |

| This thread continue to be bewildering as it seems that the Tpads 760 series had plenty of OS/2 support as per IBM support site, perhaps as now we are referred to the Lenovo updated pages the old legacy models are not as easily accessible, however try to refer to the 770 series and there you'll find some/plenty of hints to what your problem could be. You cross-posted this thread on several news/web pages, so far it seems all suggestions where to no avail to your problem, sound strange, so something could be wrong either with the machine or with the eCS boot diskettes. Try OS/2 Warp udpated diskettes for Tpads, install OS/2, if you succeed than you'll know something it's wrong with eCS. Go figure. |

| I did try the updated installation diskettes for Warp ver 4 with the eCS 1.1 cd. It did not see the eCS 1.1 cd. I have downloaded a Smart Boot Manager that was sent to me. It is at http://www.sourceforge.net . I will create a Smart Boot Manager diskette and try it with the eCS 1.1 cd (I will use it on my other Thinkpads to try FreeDOS and ReactOS [both of which have a bootable cd to install their os's]). I have also downloaded the installation diskette(s) software from the member section of http://www.ecomstation.com . I have used dsk4pm from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu to create the diskettes. I will try them soon. I will return with the results; good, bad or indifferent.

| Now, it seems to be a problem of the CD drive. I have the following experience with my old machine from my work: it was able to read the W4 CD but it *was not* able to read eCS 1.1 CD! I run Neanderthal Technology ver. 4.0. I got "device not ready" and similar errors when I tried the eCS CD. The CD drive was some 8x archaic drive. My new machine is able to read the eCS CD. In the other words, the installation CD of eCS uses some newer format not known to the old CD drives. If you can then try some newer CD drive. |

The cd drive that I use on my Thinkpad 760EL is made for that model. I might try an external pcmcia cdrom drive and see if that works. The eCS 1.1 can be seen in the drive when I am running Warp ver 4. I will be trying the new(ish) installation/boot diskettes that I recently created.

Radek might have the answer. My eCS 1.1 cds where CD-R, not stamped like the Warp 4 cds. Not all older CD drives could read them. The question is, can the laptop read the eCS 1.1 cd when booted to OS/2 or some other OS? Can it read other CD-R or CD-RW disks?

............then BWG should try the CD firmware update as often it's the case. |

When the Thinkpad is booted to the Warp ver 4 that is on it, it can see the eCS 1.1 cd when I place it in the cdrom drive. I can view the disc (at least the directories).

If you can see the directories then your CD drive is able to read the CD. Period. The problem is therefore somewhere else. I can suggest only one thing. Get a software, which is able to create a partition image and recover a partition from the image. Install eCS elsewhere and install only the absolutely neccessary parts, create the image, place the image on your thinkpad, and finish the installation. Then you can create another image (if you can connect a CD burner to the notepad), "tailored" especially for the notepad. You will install from the image and not from the installation CD in the future. It should pass and it should be the simplest way of getting eCS on your "problematic" notepad. |

Radek's idea is good. An alternative, is to pull the drive from the laptop, and mount it in a desktop. Then, do the installation there. To do this, you will need an adapter to convert the notebook drive connector to a standard IDE connector, but, they are cheap and handy to have.

I recently bought an adapter from eBay. It allows a 2.5 notebook hard drive to be connected to the 3.5 connection used by main boards.

I tried the updated diskettes software from eCS member download section. I tried the Smart Boot Manager. It still has the the 'error in obtaining driver parameters'. I will give the suggestion of 'removing the hard drive and installing it - via the adapter - in another computer that can boot from a cd drive' idea a try. I can do it while testing the mini-itx boards before installing them into their unique cases. It might be awhile since I am still looking for the front panel connectors.
