1. OSFree and OS/2 Warp? |
|
|
Can one use the diskettes created by OSFree (I believe the files are at http://www.os2.cz in the download section but I am not sure). It replaces some of the installation diskettes when installing version 4 of OS/2.

I heard that it is not supported and would be risky to use them.

| There seems to be renewed interest in the OSFree project at http://www.osfree.org but the site has not changed much but there seems to be more activity at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osfree . The OSFree source code is at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu and the source code of FreePM is still being worked on at http://frepm.sourceforge.net (not immediately apparent but if one goes through the directories one will find some of fairly recent dates). I also sent an e-mail (via their feedback section) to IBM about supoorting the OSFree project. I suggested that they could support OSFree and FreePM and still comply with M$ (they could eventually drop OS/2 and still support OSFree as an open source project like they do Linux [I also suggested this to them too]). IMHO - it is an alternative to IBM releasing the source code to Warp.

| I tried the OSF_EN.zip version of OSFree (different from the one being worked [or at least being discussed at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osfree ]). IIIRC - it was suppose to be a replacement for the first three diskettes in the installation diskettes. It booted to the OSFree but there wasn't anything to install (it seems it was a trial). I tried formating a small drive with it and booting from the small hard drive. It would not permit (or so it seem) the /s function. When the small hard drive booted, it asked for diskette number one (which I put in but it still looked for diskette 1). The hard drive was used and might have been defective too. PS This is different from what is being attempted at http://www.osfree.org (which doesn't seem to have been updated lated [IIRC from the last time I was there] but there seems to be alot of discussion on how to do it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osfree (the FreeOS group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freeos seems to have been abandoned ). I hope it goes beyond just a discussion. The latest source code for OSFree (from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu ) and FreePM (http://frepm.sourceforge.net ) are in the files section (one should check the FreePM site to download any files that have been updated [which seems to be worked on currently - it would be nice if this was true of OSFree but one can hope ]).

You found leaked version of OS/2 source code.. According osFree (not pirated): Most probaly osFree project will be at sourceforge.net |

http://sourceforge.net/projects/osfree/ This is the command line tools for OSFree ( "open source analogs of IBM OS/2 command line tools" ). I used 'osfree' as the search words at http://www.sourceforge.net but it only listed the above.

I mentioned OSFree at the http://www.ecomstation.com forum. Perhaps if they could get involved (be to OSFree what RedHat is to Linux) they could host a site(?)

| Tom, regarding os2free.org the main problem there has been that there is too little happening around the project; as far what I get regarding info. Main plans for os2free.org was to set up some sort of online forum there to get more feedback on what people want to see or not. I have actually not checked the visitors logs for number of visitors. But, I could do this to figure out how many visitors it has had. I used to read the Yahoo group for os2free but got tired after a while since it was the same crap all over again all the time. People spent more time on but's and If's instead of something creative. Moving the site to SourceForge but would this improve the project overall; meaning would it produce more code? I doubt that. But I'm open for suggestion on activities regarding the os2free.org site. /Kim |

Hi, Kim. I consider main problem was closing CVS and no any answers from project lead (JMA). Really, I can contribute some little work to project. At least I can collect all existent code and integrate to one build system and one compiler. Finishing of command line tools not so far. Most of tools already done.Anyway, will no any contributions because it is impossible to contribute. No CVS, no webpages, no forums. Only maillist. So, if it possible to have CVS and webpages for project, then it can help to move project forward. |

| Prokushev, The current page is a plain static layout and te nd to get hard to update since you need ftp access to update it. But, I could either set up phpBB or UltraBoard forum to be used as the main entry to the site. Eitherway it's fast done so there should be any problem with that. Setting up CVS shouldn't be any problem either; what I would need then is either a url where to get a proper software to be installed on Linux Mandrake or that I create an account for anyone that would not mind to set it up and take care of it. So if you or anyone else would not mind to take care of the CVS there should not be any problem as I see it. /Kim |

So, no any possibility to update site?[quote]No problem there since I'm the one that has the domain; so I can update it without any problem. If anyone have a layout idea; it's just matter of uploading the layout. I know that there has been some suggestions of new layout. But, there should be tools to maintain the site easy without ftp access. So it's just matter of of ideas of what is need to jump start the page again.
