| Hi all. I need to buy OS/2 v2.11. Looking at E-bay there seems to be different flavors with varing numbers of disks. I have seen 83g8090 which seems to be on 1.44MB disks and 83g8189 which appears to be 2.8MB disks. Is there a way to identify which are full versions and which are recovery or something else? I am looking for a full installation pack that I can install onto a vergin machine. Many Thanxs . Martin |

| We want 2.11 because we have a 486SX running 2.11 with some scientific SW that drives labratory equipment attached to a despoke I/O card. This system is a complete mistery to us as we have no knowledge how it works. In addition we do not have the original V2.11 install media. We need the installation disks to rebuild the system if the disk crashes and needs replacing. We are also worried that if we upgrade the OS to a more modern version that the scientific SW will stop running. As we have very little knowledge about the system we want to keep the variables to a minimum. Regards Mart |

Then v.2.11 is the most reasonable decision. Still, I suggest trying a more recent versions You can be (almost) sure, that they will be backward compatible with v.2.11 .One interesting possibility is the v.3 demo. Long time ago, the demo was distributed FREE OF CHARGE as a CD with one computer magazine (I think it was Computer World but I am not sure at all). Perhaps, you would be able to gain the demo somehow. It is a fully functional OS/2 v.3 working for 90? days. More than enough for testing your lab soft whether it will work with it. Otherwise, no version of OS/2 is a freeware or abandonware. A new (legal) OS/2 equals forking out money. |

Hallo Mart, my advice is to contact an OS/2 specialist and have her/him a look at the machine. If the machine does something important it's no wasted expense to pay an OS/2 professional . Please post your approximate location to see who may be able to give you an inexpensive visit . Best regards, Axel |

last updated at 26 Jan, 2005 06:26 (2 times) Hey nittedal_boy,If you want specific advice about particular versions of OS/2 2.11 that you had mentioned in your earlier post, maybe include the URL (web page) to it. There were upgrade versions and full versions of the operating system sold. I'm not keen on version numbers, but perhaps, looking at what you are seeing could help. Additionally, I would recommend getting a newer version of OS/2 on eBay or elsewhere. Perhaps getting the latest version from Serenity Systems known as eCS (eComStation). Install this newer version on another PC, then install your program to it. Problems that you may or may not have: Y2K (date) issues beyond Y2K from your hardware (486-based PC) and software (OS/2 2.11). This may not be an issue to you. Learn about OS/2. One of the best books (may still be available new at Amazon) is "OS/2 Warp Unleashed". There also was an "OS/2 2.11 Unleashed" if I remember correctly. You should have no problem upgrading to a newer version. I had upgraded a PBX (phone system) from a 16-bit version of OS/2 (1.x) to a newer 32-bit version (4.x) with no problem (other than the stress of worrying about failure and getting the system Y2K compliant). You will also find other stories about OS/2 backwards compatibility elsewhere, that doesn't apply to Microsoft Windows (my daughter has software that worked on Win 98SE, but fails to work properly on Win XP). Best Wishes in your task. Keep us posted on your results. |

| Thank you all for your contributions. I was just hoping to find out how to identify full os/2 installation package and have been encouraged to go for a newer version. To answer a few questions. 1. I am in Oslo Norway. Do you know any specialists here? 2. I am more than happy to pay for a copy of OS/2. In fact I will probably pay top dollar. For my future plans. 1. I will stay with the antique hardware because I know it supports my despoke I/O card. 2. I will still hunt out 2.11 as it comes on floppy disks (no provision for an internal CD on the current hardware without hacking a big hole in the case) 3. When I have a working system I will think about upgrading the hardware & software on a controlled upgrade path. So thats it for now. I will let you know the outcome when I find a copy of OS/2 and have it shipped to Oslo and install it. This will take a few weeks or months though. Thanxs to you all again. Mart |

Well, there is an active user group both in Norway ( http://www.os2bfn.no/ ) and Sweden ( http://www.os2ug.se/ ) (as well in Denmark) where you would be able to get hold of people. As well, I'm located in Malmoe, Sweden and if you need help to verify the application that you need to run within a more new and modern enviroment I would be happy to help you out to test the software. If this is of any interest, send me an e-mail at kim at haverblad dot se. /Kim |

| nittedal_boy, The item on you linked to, looks like what you are looking for. As a bonus, it includes the manual. It is also nice that is is unused and in original shape. One thing, though, is the floppy media. Magnetic particles tend to flake off with time and become unreliable. As to buying new software and service, head to Mensys. I have bought from them safely and securely and they shipped halfway around the world. They are in the Netherlands (might make a good vacation ...) http://shop.mensys.nl/index.html Their web site is in more than one language, which is a great benefit. |

Hi, nittedal_boy, If you buy an old copy of OS/2 v2.11 on floppy disks may I suggest that you make new floppy copies to help reposition any bits and bytes that have started migrating within the magnetic media. It is also a good idea to back up your original floppies at least twice so you don't take a chance on an erratic floppy drive eating up your original disks.
