| Hi, I think what I wrote in the bounty suggestion was not detailed enough...: I'm not sure about whether it's possible to do a simple "port" of TrueCrypt to the os/2 platform. I'm pretty convinced, that additional work (quite a lot!) has to be done "around" the TrueCrypt "kernel" to provide a useable solution (e.g. drive emulation or IFS driver). The ideal solution of course would be to have both a working os/2 version providing TrueCrypt "objects" as well as having access to those objects that were created on other platforms (e.g. a TrueCrypt "Share" on a windows or linux server from an OS/2 client and vice versa). Looking at TrueCrypt, I think the os/2 and eCS platforms would greatly benefit from such enhancements. At least, I would like to have a way of encrypting important data like business finances and - why not - passwords... Greetings Thomas |

| ...just to let you know: I've sent an email to one of the guys from TrueCrypt.org to point them to our bounty (because on their site they said something about "supporting more platforms" was a planned for the future). Here's the answer: >Hello, > >Thanks for letting us know. Honestly, I am somewhat >skeptical that someone will actually try and port TrueCrypt >to OS/2. Creating a new driver for on-the-fly encryption >from scratch is a very difficult and demanding task. > I'll be very happy if I'm wrong. > >Anyhow, I wish you good luck in your efforts! ...maybe they'll be posting something on their site about our "efforts", I don't know. I also told them that we'ld be pleased if they'ld include a link to our bounty for interested developers... we'll see, maybe it'll help. Greetings (and a merry Xmas to you all in advance...) Thomas Sincerely, Ennead |

| There has been a secure & compressed files IFS: Zipstream & Zipstream SEcure. I never managed to get version 2.0 running reliably here + you still see all the files on the drive + no linux version AFAICS. Unfortunately, the company's internet site http://www.carbonbased.com.au/ reports only: "Under construction" Last thing was the announcement of version 2.0 - has this been released? http://www.warpstock.org/news/press/073100a.html Anyway, maybe one of the guys down under can provide some help in porting TRueCript to an OS/2 IFS - ideally maintaining windows/inux compatibility. last updated at 21 Feb, 2006 02:13 (1 times) A hardware solution like the X-Wall chip from eNova (http://www.enovatech.net/products.htm) would be better.Abit has the SecureIDE solution (Price: http://www.geizhals.at/eu/a109097.html) equipped with the X-Wall chip but it's only using the 40 Bit DES encryption. Last month a user on os2.org said it would not work with eCS (OS/2) because it will tough the partition. Maybe he's right...maybe not. Here is the information from Abit: http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/de/multimedia/multimedia_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=SecureIDE&fMTYPE=Encryption+Device
When booting up your system, go to DOS and implement the FDISK instruction. This instruction will make a partition to format the Hard Disk to accept the secure IDE key. After this procedure, there are no more extra steps to perform besides using the IEEE key to "open" the hard disk each time you boot up your system.
If I read the following information about the SecureIDE device it should work as everything is encrypted: http://weblog.cemper.com/a/200307/30-secure-ide-new-hardware-security-feature-explained.php#comments SecureIDE actually seems to use a user-key stored on a USB-device as you can see in ABIT'S explanation of SecureIDE and the ecryption is initialized from the first FDISK on... so it encrypts/decrypts the entire disk contents in real-time, including boot sector and operating system.
I'll go to the CeBIT next month I look if I can find something there. If not I may buy the SecureIDE device just to play with it...it's not that expensive.

...basically yes, but TrueCrypt is: - free (open source) - platform independant (at least if ported <g>) Anyway: If someone comes up with a Cipher plugin that handles TrueCrypt objects... great! Greetings Thomas |

I just bought a ABIT SecureIDE device on eBay (11,50 EUR incl. shipping). It should arrive on Thursday or Friday, so in about a week I'm able to say if it works with eCS or not. Have a nice weekend! [EDIT] Got the device today (2006-03-01) and I'm now preparing to test it (downloading latest eCS 1.2R German beta at the moment). The FDISK Instruction is a joke. Well you have to create partitions which you need to format...yes of course I have to do that. Here is the Quick Installation Guide (bottom of the page): http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/multimedia/multimedia_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=SecureIDE&fMTYPE=Encryption+Device

It took my a little bit longer then expected but I finally had the time to test the SecureIDE. It works using eCS (LVM). There is nothing more to say. Now I only need a stronger X-Wall chip, as 40 Bit DES is to easy to break. I still haven't found a online shop which sells controller using the X-Wall with Trippe DES (192 Bit) or AES.
