1. Install of mediaplayer crashes in CW MM 0.25
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
Hi.

When I try to install the CWMM 0.25 package, the multimedia classes install fine, but the install process for the media player crashes. It gets to the point where the new media player folder is opened. It is displayed correctly with STARTUP.WAV in it, but hangs saying "searching for media files" or something like that and there is another open window with the title createcd.exe. The WPS is blocked. I can kill PMSHELL.EXE from WatchCat, but then the install is hosed.

And yes, I did follow the installation instructions to the very point. I even ran CHECKINI twice, cleanini *and* Unimaint where using an INI cleaner was advised.

Does the same thing here, had to run checkini and all. Seems the .25 just doesn't work at all here, went back to .24 and all is well. Well as well as these things every worked that is ::smile::

I've installed 0.2.5 on 3 systems and it works just fine for me. With the MP3 and OGG classes of the AudioPak just re-released, I can play WAV, MIDI, MP3 and OGG files just fine from within the player folder.

I did run checkini two or three times.

Did you rename mmparts.dll? One has to boot from floppy or use unlock.exe to get that done.

Why doesn't the author of this pieve of trash get his head out from between his legs and acctually try to figure out what is really wrong with the installation instead of saying it may fail on some systems. If classes need to be de-initalized, do it PROPERLY, other programs manage to do it without locking up pmshell. If a file needs to be unlocked and renamed, have your crummy install program do it, i wouldn't mind the distro being 4k bigger due to the inclusion of unlock.exe the REAL unlock.exe not the one that uses dosreplacemodule to do it, that thing don't work.

I'm sorry to see this discussion degrade so fast.

The author of the cw-mmclasses is doing a great job and deserves all the constructive help. Not many other developers are working on improving MMOS/2. We need to let the process take its course and that takes time. If anyone doesn't agree with running development edition of code on their machine, then don't, especially if one is aware that an installation may not work on all machines.

I fully agree with what you say Me, but and a big but is that if it just would be a plain *.EXE file that one should execute and run there wouldn't be any problem. But, now we are talking about code that has to be "implemented" along with the existing MMOS2 abd this could also ruin the MMOS2 installation as well (happend for me).

And for the record I have so far never ever manage to get a proper working installation (I had to clean out the ini files, etc) of CW MM. Not that I really complaint about it since I knew that it was early based code. It would be great to get a proper installation and de-installation for CW MM so people actually dare to try it out. I haven't downloaded the latest releases since I just don't ought to play around with it and was waiting for other to give some positive feedback. Currently I can't really say that it's that positive, yet, so I'll wait for a while more.

But, I really hope that this projects reach it's goal and that other can sign up to give a helping hand. I don't code, so I can't help out with that. Maybe there is something else that I can help out with, I don't know. I see this as one of the primary projects currently going on within the OS2 community along with other great projects such as Odin.

I don't think he deserves any compliments on it at all. There is a reason why no one works with MMPM anymore and that is because MMPM is hell. It is poorly documented/poorly functioning code which should be avoid at all costs. Adding to it's crappiness isn't helping the matter. In the first stages of development you should perfect the installation and deinstallation along with registration (and de-registration) of classes. This is the FIRST step, not the last. Figure out how to do what you want to do before you code the whole damned thing and have to remove it. His horrid class which scans through media files and adds things to my registry is just aggrivating, especially when it attempts to (and fails) doing it over network drives and causes my entire wps to lock if I use the drive icon on warp center to browse my network mp3 directories. This is very poorly thought out. If i could get rid of it and still have my computer functioning I would.. but for now I am stuck leaving it intact and hope that he sorts it out eventually or something inspires me to reinstall. The MMIOMP3 package (the codecs) are great... (and not by cw). however cwmm should be avoid at all costs. The same man who gave us AudioCDCreator which has some of the worst default (won't even encode exesively long file names without changing half the option) which looks more like a mess of rexx, and wps-wizard which should be renamed wps-mutilator should either be helped out by someone who has a clue how to code wps classes. or give up.

ROTFL!

Brilliant Sebadoh, brilliant. I really enjoyed reading your funny postings. Obviously you don't have any clue what you're writing about. Unfortunately your adding of insults to the writing doesn't really compensate your total lack of knowledge. Take a piece of advice, get some good books about CORBA, SOM, WPS programming and the OS/2 system architecture and maybe in a few years even you will be able to take part in some of the, at least basic, discussions taking place.
To prevent looking like a complete idiot again you might consider a word of wisdom by Mark Twain:

" 'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and
remove all doubt."

Feel free to post again. The audience is always thankful for a good laugh.

Quite sporty Chris.

I´m amazed you even took the trouble to respond to this ``os/2 guy`` like comments .
(or perhaps it is : HIM !!!)

Although not everything goes well with the CW classes and MY config, at least I can show off to my winxx son what a decent os and mmedia files are capable off !!

Thanks for your program, and good luck with your effort in replacing the mmos2 classes completely

Actually I do have a clue about what i am writting about. I am simply stating that your software doesn't work at the lowest nessacary lebvel (the installer) and you should simply correct your method of going about installing and registering your application before you even bother releasing it. Breaking alot of people's computers is not your intent, or is it?

Unfortunately your adding of insults to the writing doesn't really compensate your total lack of knowledge.

It is one way to get your attention apparently. Considering I've had nothing but failure with most of your applications and the ones that do work take so much time to configure properly and half the time don't even react to the configuration correctly: BTW: ABR (average bit rate) mp3's should not encode as VBR. which is why I am no longer using audiocdcreator to make mp3's since it AGAIN totally disregards options in it's configuration.

Take a piece of advice, get some good books about CORBA, SOM, WPS programming and the OS/2 system architecture and maybe in a few years even you will be able to take part in some of the, at least basic, discussions taking place.

I've read most of the books back when they were new (circa 1991-1993) I know what the difficulties are with programming with them. I have used pieces of them in applications I have written (though I admit i try to avoid it due to the fact that the result is generally not worth the time involved to code it) however you totally skipped over the MMOS2 part of the statement, which is MMOS2 is the red headed stepchild of OS/2. It is the most abused and useless part of the operating system when used heavily creates nothing but random pm freezes, complete loss of audio or worse (when dealing with video files). This isn't completely due to lack of quality of codecs or ioprocedures though it isn't helped by the lack of quality of most OS/2 Sound drivers and it's problems with various buffer sizes... If you wanna see something great with Conners MMPack for OS/2 accidentally click on a couple hundred selected mp3's and watch your pmshell die. Doing the same thing in windows (not claiming it is better) will just cause a certain number of them to not play.. in OS/2 it will play a few (have sblive driver to it supports multiple streams) and then lock up everything nice and solid.

" 'Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and
remove all doubt."

Atleast your qouting is better then your coding.

Feel free to post again. The audience is always thankful for a good laugh.

Actually, most of my posting is for a laugh.. and to vent the frustration that your software has given me.

Sebodah,

If you want my attention write a bug report. I never got one so apparently there're no problems. So what.

I wont argue with you because your postings are evidence you don't have the technical knowledge to be taken seriously nor do you care about getting the facts right. Half of your statments are simply plain wrong which may be proven without any difficulties. Start with reading the chapter about DosReplaceModule() in os2undoc.inf, after that go to the Data-CD-Creator template and you will see that the default *is* to create long filenames. And so on and so on...

If you don't like my stuff, then *don't use it* but don't waste my time with your useless rants and FUD. It works for me and others and that's enough. I'm doing that for my own in house use and just for fun. If you want it in another way pay me a couple of bucks and I'll create a custom build just for you.

I will not react to any of your postings or insults again so do something useful with your time in the future. You're not a person I like to have any conversation with again.

Chris

Sebodah,

Written bug reports to you and they don't do any good, when your program does something which it isn't supposed to (or in this case the mkisofs you ported) you just defend the way it is working, however you don't actually bother to even check if it is working the same as the linux version it is ported fom (which it is not) of course this is no matter to you because it is working the way yuo want it, but it is not working right if it was working right, it would have done what I needed, and had expected.

I wont argue with you because your postings are evidence you don't have the technical knowledge to be taken seriously nor do you care about getting the facts right. Half of your statments are simply plain wrong which may be proven without any difficulties. Start with reading the chapter about DosReplaceModule() in os2undoc.inf,

I know what dosreplacemodule is... but to be honest I wouldn't use it.. when I want to unlock a file that is in use I use the freeware unlock.exe which has a much greater chance of unlocking it.. (not the one you include) sure it may not be the way IBM thinks it should be done, but IBM hasn't always put the most thought into the way utilities and applications get updated within the OS.. their own fixpack installers are proof of this.

after that go to the Data-CD-Creator template and you will see that the default *is* to create long filenames. And so on and so on...

Yes, and when it is turned off it create unmangled working file tree's... however if i use linux and use the same options on mkisofs it will create unmangled long file names.. so something is funky with your port... a file should never lose it's extension due to shortening of the filenam.. a .mp3 should always stay .mp3 no matter what.. or else it is useless.

If you don't like my stuff, then *don't use it* but don't waste my time with your useless rants and FUD. It works for me and others and that's enough. Fair enough. But releasing something publicly infers that you are willing to make it function for everyone.. not just youself..

I say boloney. If you would submit a well described problem report, the author will certainly fix the problem if there is one. It is evident from your postings that you only have bad-mouthed the author.

It works fine here. If it doesn't for you, then submit a well worded problem report (refraining from personal insults).

> If you wanna see something great with Conners MMPack for > OS/2 accidentally click on a couple hundred selected mp3's > and watch your pmshell die.

Good grief.. you got a couple of hundered mp3's on your system, all legaly acquired of course? Get a decent stereo system and listen to music on it, or submit this as a bug report (you have already, right?). I tell you the way I would fix that: Limit the number of files to play to 20 or so. That would make something like this fool and i..... proof.
Who in the right mind would want to play hundreds of mp3's anyway? Better solutions than a PC are available for that.

You may be laughing at these posts, but in the progress you have "removed all doubt" and lost all credibility.

Who's amused now!

That is good that you say that, but I have submitted serveral reports and then just gave up, and found other ways of doing what I want which required less effort on my part.

How much more can I say then it doesn't work. it doesn't even work long enough to give a bug report. Install product, when install program finishes it locks up, product is in a half installed and uninstallable state, trying to remove the application makes the OS/2 install unusable, trying ot install it again usually allows the program to run, the os to function but leads to problems later on. If the installer worked, I could probably work out other problems.. however the installer is my only problem at this point. Since I can not get the newest version to install at all.

Actually I have over 1600mp3's and that number increases daliy (until I finish encoding all of my cd's). However i did say "accidently" hit play, this is to say I am not intentionally trying to play any songs, but there has to be some sort of way to limit the attempts to play the songs, I've seen other OS/2 classes limit access to one occurance or delay until the first occurance was stopped.

>Actually, most of my posting is for a laugh.. and to vent the

Removed doubt of what? The doubt that I know what I am speaking about when I am only saying that a piece of software which I have repeatedly tried to use amongst claims that it in some way will improve my satisfaction with OS/2 can't even manage to install without trashing my system, even on a clean boot? I fail to see the logic in this, i have made no technical claims beyond the fact that extending mmpm is kind of a worthless effort, mmpm needs to bre re-written and replaced, replacing the ui part isn't going to help unless you deal with the underlying problems. But this doesn't matter, I have said all I have to say on this matter.
