| You cannot install OS/2 "in" XPP except with VPC !!! You can squeeze your XPP partition down to about 10GB. Then add the OS/2 Bootmanager and second primary C: HPFS partition for OS/2 and install OS/2 into this second primary C: partition !! The rest of the HDD you partition up to your needs ! Good luck |

Good day Sam, If you don’t mind can you email what it is impossible and what you mean by VPC? You mentioned about squeezing, how to perform this? If I perform squeezing do I need to reformat/reinstall XPP? Thank you. Best regards, Arulthas. |

VPC is "Virtual PC". It's a way of running an operating system within another. It's basically a program that pretends to be a PC. You then install the OS inside it. VPC was made bu Connectix, and ported to OS/2 by Innotek (http://www.innotek.de). But, as Microsoft bought VPC (or possibly all of Connectix), I'm not sure of the status of VPC. An alternative is SViSta (http://www.serenityvirtual.com/). This is from the same people who did eCS (a repackaged version of OS/2). It is in beta at the moment.

By this, he meant to resize the partition. This is to change the partition size without deleting the partition. PowerQuests PartitionMagic has been doing this for years. DFsee (http://www.dfsee.com) will also do it. It's the better choice for OS/2 users (has OS/2, DOS, Windows and Linux versions), is cheaper and does a lot more than PartitionMagic.

Hi guys, So basically can I installed OS/2 together with XPP or not without the VPC? If can how and if not what is the workaround. Thank you. Best regards, Arulthas. |

| Yes, You can either install Win XP and have it to co-exist on the same hard disk and on it's own partition. Or you can run VPC under Windiws XP and install an OS2 enviroment within the VPC. |

Hi Kim, Other then the commercial VPC that you recommended earlier is there any freeware VPC where I can download and try? Thank you. Best regards, Arulthas. |

| As I am going to be attempting this process soon myself, are there any pitfalls to watch out for when installing OS/2 onto its own partition on a machine that already has XP Pro on it? Shadallark Canada

Well, there is no trial or so available and due to the fact that Microsoft has bought the product I doubt that we ever see anything more, but could be worth either asking or at least check in at: http://www.innotek.de/products_e.html /Kim |

Well, only issue I can think about would be if you haven't an updated media of 2000/XP with SP1. If not windows installer will kill the OS2 BootManager. Else from that there isn't any problem installing Windows and OS2 together. Of course there is always the 1024 cylinder problem, but nothing new under the sun. /Kim |

Hi Kim, I face this problem on my earlier installation with W98SE and OS/2. How to overcome this issue for XPP (NTFS) and OS2 combination? Thank you. Best regards, Arulthas. |

|
| ... like following: A) 1st primary C: partition (original XPP installation on system already) B) Bootmanager C) 2nd primary C: partition with OS/2 in HPFS further partitions up to ones needs i.e. mine: D: logical FAT32 dedicated exchanging data of this system E: logical HPFS EXECs for OS/2 F: logical ... G: logical ... H: on server (HOME) for user data There are 1000 other ways to get to your arabic nights or possibly nightmares !? Good luck |

Well, following thread would give you some more info and as well the topic is well covered regarding how to set up the partitions. But, see to that you have the latest IBM IDE drivers or that you're using Dani IDE. Regarding the boot partition for OS2 I usually create this at the very first part of the disk. Since I usually only installs the OS on the boot partition I usually keeps it around 500-700mb and then install all the apps on a D: partition. If you don't want to waste a partition to install OS2 boot manager I would suggest to use Air Boot instead since it is installed only within the MBR. /Kim |
