1. Disk Defragger for HPFS for OS/2? |
|

Is there a disk defragger for HPFS for OS/2? I had one that was a 'command line' defragger but it was not great. Is there one that can work from the presentation manager?
OS/2 Warp-ed to the very end.

| Do you really need that? In the rare cases that HPFS suffers from fragmentation the best way to get around it is to make a backup of the partition, format the partition and restore the backup. A HPFS defragger does the same, but is much slower. |

| Well, a tool to mentioned is always The GammaTech Utilities that includes following: Information - The documentation file. Analyze - The PM Analyze utility. Disk Map - The Disk Map utility. FAT Opt - The FAT Optimizer utility. Files - The PM Files utility. GtDisk - The GammaTech Disk utility. HPFS Opt - The PM HPFS Optimizer. S Edit - The GammaTech Sector Editor. Sentry - Boot sector monitor and File lock utility. SysInfo - Display system information. UnDelete - Undelete. I think above software is still available, but it is payware, ie not shareware or any kind of free software //Kim |

last updated at 20 Aug, 2001 17:25 (1 times) My understanding of HPFS is that it starts writing data out in the middle of the drive and works its way out.. thus no real need for a defragger, because the likelihood of the hard drive heads will be at any place at any time, most likely the center. In my years of using OS/2, since v2.0, I've never needed a defragger.

| Well, I can admit the I actually never have had any use for a defragger for OS2. But, there are tools available for both hpfs and fat drivers under OS2. I recently re-formated my disk, but otherwise it would be of interest to check how the condition of the disk would have been and check it out some defragger program. //Kim |

| I've used the tools in Graham utilities even though most of them are "command line". They're great and have saved me a lot of headache and money. The defragment tool (and some other tools too) runs fast if it's hidden or as fullscreen. I usually download large files with AWGet that I have to resume, day after day. That means that the files get chopped up in smaller pieces that HPFS-defrag can put together to one continous file that's faster for WarpVision or app xyz to read. So a defragment toll can be of some help, but hpfs-ud (undelete) is the most useful and powerful app in the collection.

AFAIK using Warp and HPFS (HPFS386 too) there is no need to defragment files and also there is no way to do this. You may simple copy fragmented file in to new location and if on this partition is enough unfragmented free space, it will be copied there and be unfragmented. All HPFS optimisers I've seen do same simple copy and then rename, but they can do this for whole drive, subdirectories, etc... Only situation where defragmetation on HPFS drive will be good is for example partition of 1Gb size with 300 Mb of small files, and copying there file of 700 Mb (cd image for example). There will not be unfragment free space for new file and it will be produce problems in using for high speed burning. |

8. Gamma Tech Defragger? |

I think Gamma Tech has a defragger. Would it work with eCS 1.1?

I wasn't try this one, but I do not beleive that is different from HPFSopt or HPFSdefrag. I do not own eCS too, but as this is more HPFS related than wich Warp version related, I beleive that will work without any problems. |

GammaTech's defragger (HPFS Opt) is the fastest I have used. In fact, compared to Graham Utilities defragger (the other commercial defragger), it is MUCH faster in my experience. BigWarpGuy Would it work with eCS 1.1?
Of course it does. eCS 1.1 *IS* OS/2. There is nothing unique about eCS's implementation of HPFS. |
