1. Wireless Cards recommendation for laptops? |
|
|
| Simple questions regarding wireless cards for laptops and what to pick based on the info at os2world.be: - Artem - Cisco - IBM What should one pick based on price and performance, etc. and usage? IBM cards seems overprices as always. Artem cards seems hard to get hold of and then there is Cisco. And I can't find anything against them. Did i miss something here regarding OS2 and wireless? /Kim |

I'm using a Linksys WPC11 wireless card with eCS 1.1. Works very good; recommended.

| I'm using an Ambicom WL1100B-PC/PCI. The driver is a private beta. I hope it goes public soon. It works well in the cafes here in Santa Cruz. I must note that in Santa Cruz I feel like I am the only one who does not use Apple Macintosh computers.

Once I am able to get eCS on my Thinkpad 760EL, I will search for a wifi card that works with eCS-OS/2. I saw a wifi driver at the download section of http://www.ecomstation.com (I don't remember what it said it supported).

Luc I'm currently trying out with w LinkSys WPC-11 v4 card and so far no luck. I'm trying out with genprism.2.0rc4 - what version/release are you using? Any specific parameters one should check a bit extra? |

| I'm eagerly looking for a wireless card for my laptop. At first I ordered the Jacaranda card from Mensys, though it was very expensive, but a way to be sure of getting the right drivers. But the card was out of production. Instead I ordered the Roamabout, (also from Mensys and quite a bit cheaper) but no answer, mybee this is also out of production, I don't know. Instead I checked up the warp.be hardwarelist and found the Cnet CNWLC-811 PCMCIA and that was very cheap, about 20€. Ok I now have it, but does it function.....no..at least not yet. The recommended driver is the ibmprism, which I've downloaded from ecomstation.com. Mybee it is something that I've foreseen, but I rather guess that the card I bought is a new version, with another chip, even if the name is exactly as in the hardware list. How on earth should one now one have an os2-functional card...sigh..Sorry for my extensive contribution, but I'm just frustrated..specially when it comes to PC-cards which seems to be hard to get into function. |

| What kind of laptop is it and if you have problem with pc-card does the system have a mini pci slot? Most system usually have this today. Also to be mentioned if it has, get a IBM mPCI wireless card and since you're in Sweden you might be interested of joining in on an order from the states for couple of IBM mPCI cards to keep the freight cost down. |

Hello! I use an Acer Aspire 1350 and I don't know how to see if it is an mini pci slot. In winxp the card is working and the driver that winxp uses for the slot is called "PCI 1410 Cardbus controller". I don't know if that indicates a slot of the type you mentioned or if it is an ordinary cardbus slot. In my eCS system I use Daniella Engerts driver for Texas Instruments slots. I've used the original pcmcia.sys and the patched type and in neither case the card is correctly identified. In the former case it says "mixed" or "multiple" type, in the other case it says "memory card". The card is not coming up in hardwaremanager. How do I identify if it is an miniPci slot? |

| If you turn over your laptop and check the underside there should be some kind of small doors that you should be able to dettach. One of them should hide the memory and another should hide the builtin modem. Finally if the system is around 1 to 2 years old the should be a 3rd door for the mini pci and should look something like this if you open it:
It's also a matter of that the laptop has been prepared to use mpci wifi cards, ie are there any antennas to attach to the card. If not, you need to wire up the system yourself and that is really easy actually. |

| In fact there is just one moveable door and that is for the memory. The cardbusunit or what it is, is a closed, not posibble to open unit,( if you don't open the whole computer). |

| I've now found my Acer "users guide" and it says it is a PC-card slot that supports standard cards of type II or type III and I guess that meens it's not a mini pci slot?! Thanks anyhow Kim, for your answers. |

Well, it sounds like that your system doesn't have a mini pci slot then. Well, we better solve primary problem with the available pc-card slot then |

| I've now mailed Cnet company and got an answer the day after, (that is good!). They told me that they have superseded the prism-chip in the old card with a chip called RALINK RT 2400, so that explain at least a part of my problems. Somebody knows something about this chip? |

Hi, Melk, I took a quick visit to the RALINK web site at: http://www.ralinktech.com/ It seems that they deal in chipsets and drivers for Window$, Linux and Mac at this time. You might email their engineering department to see if they are planning a driver for Warp/eCS in the future. At least you might be able to pick their brains about WLAN cards and drivers in general . . . Incidentally, RALAN has 10% of the global WLAN chipset market. Not bad!
