| I cannot believe that no-one has asked this question(s), but I have not been abloe to locate anything on the subject. Has anyone heard anything about eCS v2? What will it look like? Is the release date still end 2005/early 2006? Jos Joslyn

| It is in progress (and I'd expect there will be some sort of beta, whether limited or to pre-order customers or existing 1.x customers or something, but could only speculate on how the beta program will be run so anything else I leave to Serenity Systems to announce). |

| This is what I I've quoted from Serenity about the eCSmedia refresh, and where eCS 2.0 is mentioned: "Should you get this? The GA release of the Media Refresh will be available soon, so you may want to wait for that. Also, if your system is running fine and you have kept up to date with the eComStation Maintenance Tool, there is no immediate need for this update. Please note that this product does *not* contain new features. Soon we will be starting a new beta-program soon for the upcoming 2.0 release of eComStation, which will contain new features and functionality." So it seems to be on its way. |

Could you tell us what some of those "new features" will be? Are they incrimental updates to existing apps\drivers\etc. or truly new features?

OK then, does anyone else reading this thread, know what any of the new features are going to be in eCS 1.2?

Obvious to anyone reading this thread, is that "1.2" is a typo. So, It goes without saying, that I meant 2.0.

| Hi All I asked about eCS2.0 and managed to get a reply from a Warpstock attendee:- Well I can tell you what was said at Warpstock (because it's now public, obviously) - it's probably not as much as you want to hear, but *that* much is probably not known/decided yet anyway!
The timetable shows a number of milestones internal to the project, and a public Beta of eCS 2.0 is planned to be available by Christmas 2005 (no actual release date has been set). Features of Version 2.0 as currently planned: Improved ACPI support, including capturing the Power button (and then offering to power off, suspend, whatever). I presume this will include fixing the now-famous processor overhead that many people, including I, have found when eCS is involved in ACPI. It may be fixed before then, of course! Bootable JFS volumes (JFS operates faster than HPFS, especially on large volumes, so this is useful) Limited ability to resize partitions (including FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and HPFS). The "limit" is that data won't be moved, so shrinking a partition can only happen up to the physically last file already on there. Defragging beforehand would obviously give the best chance of being able to do what you want. Multi-user - by this I assume being able to use different login IDs and get your own configuration and bit of disk space, so several people could share a machine and each have, say, their own email. Integrated SAMBA (I have no further details on this - I attended the SAMBA session and have to admit that I think I left it more confused than I started! I need to do more studying.) This may optionally replace the IBM LAN Requester and Peer. New hardware support as time goes on (AMD 64 bit processors, for example, which are likely to be supported by the upcoming Media Refresh, but others as needed in future). DHCP client on multiple interfaces (currently DHCP only works on one network interface/card at a time) SSH support It's likely that other things will crop up and be added in - as usual it's a constantly moving target! Anyone with a "Software Subscription" now will be entitled to a free upgrade to Version 2 (even if in theory the subscription runs out at the end of this year and 2.0 is released after that). For others there are likely to be scaled prices for the upgrade, depending on what you have now - as is the case at the moment. Since 1.2 has been out for over a year, support for 1.1 and 1.0 is effectively finished now - if you report a bug in those you are likely to be advised to upgrade to 1.2 and see if it still happens, which is pretty much the standard procedure for evolving software. On another note, a Demo CD of eCS 1.2 is about to be released - you can boot direct from the CD and run eCS with limitations for demonstration purposes - so that people unfamiliar with OS/2 / eCS can get a feel for it. Firefox is included, and using an early copy I got at Warpstock I was surfing the net for a couple of hours and completely forgot I was using the Demo CD! The restrictions are that you can't do anything to your hard disks on HPFS, JFS or NTFS partitions (I believe you can see FAT16 partitions), you can't print, and you can't use peer/peer networking (but Internet is fine, as I said above). These are a condition of being able to distribute it to as many people as want it - without these limitations IBM would want a licence fee per CD! There we are - pretty much all I know... I guess the main changes are the multiuser bit - about time too as far as the OS/2 world goes - and the possibility of using a samba client (and server?) for eCS to replace the aging IBM peer networking bit. I did see somewhere that SNAP ENT, Not the cutdown SNAP currently included, is going to be in eCS2 - think it is posted in the eCS newgroups and on ecomstation.com So that is what I know (maybe, all things being subject to change Hope that helps Pete |

Good info Pete; thanks. I see you're suffering from the same multi-post problem as I 8( Hopefully os/2world.com will have it fixed soon. Does Samba actually have advantages over OS/2 Peer to Peer?

| Many Thx Pete, The info was great....... Lets hope that amongst other items they make significant changes to "look & feel". The desktop - whilst always solid - has been looking "dated" for many years. Also improvements on the Wi-Fi scene will help with mobility options. Also if the rumours surrounding an OpenOffice 2.0 license from Serenity are true, that will be a major boost. Jos

| Hi All Err..., No. I did not even manage to get the post sent - seemed as though the server was down.
I sent my response to support and they must have posted it (several times) - maybe my original try also showed up. Anyhow, samba - not my favourite subject at the moment as I have a device using an embedded linux os with a lousy copy of samba in it that does not work with File and Print Client. I do know that the current samba does work with File and Print Client, just waiting for the hardware supplier to update the device firmware. Probably the biggest advantage of samba as a replacement for File and Print Client networking is the fact that it is an ongoing project - when M$ make it difficult to interoperate with WinPCs due to some change in the Win Networking samba gets updated thus ensuring connectivity when required. I do not think we will see IBM updating F&P Client again... I think the Desktop is going to continue with the eWP - not sure but suspect there will be some "flashy" (for os/2 based systems) addons/options/artwork.
As far as Wi-Fi goes I think that "NDISWrapper for OS/2" is probably (hopefully) the way forward along with win32prn - both projects that plan to use a "wrapper" around current Windows nic and printer (respectively) drivers. Guess it would be nice to have the option of OO2 - however, OO115 seems to have "document capability" with OO2 and OO115 runs OK here. Subtle hint for those of an investigative nature: Odin was basically the testbed for the Innotek "window wrapper" technology. A few win32 apps that run using the Innotek (not Odin) wrapper usually have a win32_to_os2wrapper.exe type file eg ar5os2.exe for running Acrobat ReaderV5.
That wrapper is not really specific to Acrobat; I think it has to do a lot of the win32 to os2 api translations - probably with the help of the Innotek Runtime - and is the equivalent of Odin's pe.exe. OO2 will not install using the above as the "installer technology needs updating" according to the installer. It even offers to perform the update but that update fails somewhere... OO115 uses the earlier "installer technology" so I leave you to guess how to use it with ar5os2.exe Pete |
