1. Rootkits and OS/2-eCS? |

"News: Government-Funded Startup Blasts Rootkits Can you say Komoku? A startup backed by DARPA, the Navy and the Department of Homeland Security plans to destroy rootkits with a "unique approach" that can burrow into the operating system and sniff out malware's trail. http://ct.enews.eweek.com/rd/cts?d=186-3567-31-89-106905-419727-0-0-0-1 " Do rootkits have any affect on OS/2-eCS? Would OS/2-eCS be affected by the above?

| From what I understand, Rootkits effect Windows machines. They most recently were used by Sony as a part of one of their attempts to copy-protect CD's. The attempt resulted in a few lawsuits, and Sony has since stopped using Rootkit technology - for the time being. |

I love when the government gets technical! Yeah!!! burrow deep into my OS.. make your home in the kernel, feed on the evil malware.. just don't take a **** on my hd. From the article:
Komoku launched quietly in 2004 with about $2.5 million in funding and rootkit detection contracts from DARPA, the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Navy. The company has its roots at the University of Maryland, where computer scientist William Arbaugh worked on what he calls a "unique approach" to finding rootkits. ... Who's in charge?William Arbaugh, president, and James Butler, CTO; Butler wrote "Rootkits: Subverting the Windows Kernel"; the company has three full-time and two part-time employees
Isn't it pathetic when the government has to spend $2.5 million dollars to try and secure an operating system's kernel - an operating system the vendor claims is secure? |

If one has ODIN or Innowin (from Innotek) installed, would it affect ones OS/2-eCS pc? (being a Win thing and ODIN or Innowin being for using Win programs?)

Hi BWG, basically... yes. It however depends on the rootkit type. If it is a kernel rootkit that replaces DLLs or drivers by its own "counterfeits", and all the referred/needed DLLs from the windows (odin) system are present, it would work. OTOH, some rootkits target special leaks or functions within the windows subsystem that might simply not be supported by ODIN. It also depends upon the deployment mechanism of the rootkit: Some are deployed via file sharing services. If you don't run them in ODIN - no risk AFAIK. BUT: There's also rootkits for linux. What about these and emx? I have no idea... Greetings Thomas |
