| I'm trying to install my first app on eCS 1.1 and I'm stuck. I went to the warpzilla site, got firefox 2.0 compiled for os/2 in a zip file. I unzipped it, tried to run firefox.exe and just got a window of file settings. Read the readme, saw I needed gcc/libc5 so I went to that german site that makes them, downloaded and installed into C:\ecs\dll, C:\os2\dll, and C:\desktop\firefox\ (where the .exe resides). Now when I try to run firefox.exe, the hdd churns for a second or two, and then nothing happens. What did I do wrong? |

Taken from Weilbacher.org ( http://weilbacher.org/Mozilla/builds.html ) This depends on libc061.dll ( ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.1-csd1.zip ) which you need to download and install before starting it the first time. Place it in the C:\eCS\dll or C:\OS2\dll sub directory If you encounter such problems as you describe, try to start the app from the command-line as it may output some messages telling you what it expect to find but can't load. Weilbacher has some really nice builds there especially the unofficial versions of Firefox and Thunderbird tailored for OS/2 and eCS.

Yep, done that. Is that what they mean by 'install' though? This weilbacher site you mentioned is pretty clear that just unpacking it is not installing it, but doesn't give any more info than that.
Yes, I'm still seeing those same problems with this weilbacher build. Starting from a command line just makes the command prompt disappear for a second while the hard drive churns, then it reappears. Just like with the warpzilla builds.

| And there's no improvement if you try to get it to show you the profile it use either? type firefox -ProfileManager at the command prompt please also have a look @ http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html for more information regarding your problem... You can put these entries in config.sys (or in separate .cmd-file if you try to use other moz-apps) mvh / Wkr / MfG |

Yes, that's how to "install" it. The missing "more information" is: Basically, the files contained in the .zip only need to be placed in a directory that is part of the LIBPATH (setting in config.sys) or in the exe's path (the firefox directory). And that's why extraction isn't enough: You need to copy/move the files to the right place.(BTW: This is stated in the readme.txt, not directly on the website) Please check if you have a file named "popuplog.os2" (or some name that is similar to this - I don't remember...) in the root directory of your ecs boot drive. It might contain additional information for each unsuccessful launch of firefox... but with no warranty. I'm just guessing. Greetings |

| As others stated: Check your popuplog.os2 file. I bet you have a SYS3175 error. make sure you add a . (period) as one of the first entries in your LIBPATH in your config.sys This will cause any program to search the current directory for DLLs before looking through the other directories. i.e. LIBPATH=.;c:\os2\dll;c:\ecs\dll ... etc. Hope this helps. |

...er, actually firefox 2.0 depends on libc05.dll --just to verify it, I renamed libc05.dll to libc05.dllBAK and copied the libc06.dll to the directory were firefox 2.0 resides, see: http://www.chingonazo.com/noLibc05butLib06.JPG
I even tried renaming the file from the original libc06.dll to libc05.dll, see: http://www.chingonazo.com/noLibc05butRenamedLib06.JPG It was not until I renamed libc05.dllBAK to libc05.dll that I was able to execute the firefox 2.0 browser: http://www.chingonazo.com/noLibc06onlyLib05.JPG
On the other hand, for a beginner those unofficial versions may only cause frustration. As an example, earlier I updated my older version of Seamonkey with the zipped file: < http://www.aip.de/People/PWeilbacher/WO/Mozilla/Gecko1808/seamonkey-1.0.6.en-US.os2.unoff.update.zip > Quite possibly I have something that Weilbacher did not have in his test machine(s); notwithstanding, after I rebooted my machine (yes, it locked to the point of not responding to mouse and/or keyboard) I downloaded the official 1.0.6 Seamonkey version, placed the libc05.dll in the directory and Seamonkey executed with no problem...
