1. OS2.org is closing down! |
|
|
"Many of you might have expected this for some time - OS2.ORG is closing down. OS2.ORG will cease to exist. Kerni, the man behind the scene, can no longer spare enough time to keep the site up and running, Jörg Sievers (Jogi) is switching to Macintosh, and Skotti doesn't have enough spare time left. Currently we are open for ideas on how to save the site (hardware and domain). But the team will definitely stop maintainig the site. We wish to thank you for a wonderful time. " Copied from http://en.os2.org site.
OS/2 Warp-ed to the very end.

last updated at 25 Mar, 2003 21:09 (1 times) Gosh! At Warpsock Europe they've been collecting donations to do hardware upgade and now all's lost? No, I don't mean the bucks - I'm rather puzzled how such an organisation can come to an end if two people are moving away. Okay, to be honest I don't know of how many folks they are made up, but this is really bad news... on the other hand, I don't have any idea what to make of it. Wasn't that the "official" site for hosting Warpstock Europe as well? Man, we desperately need to do something about it. Bad news keep dropping in - POSSI's 'extended attribute' is dead as well and here we go for another extiction of OS/2-related sites/mags/news/people... what a great year 2003 - poor us!Thomas |

| Regarding the Warpstock Europe site they, who ever is in charge of it, can be hosted on the same server as OS2 World if needed. /Kim |

| Its really sad this news. It was such a great OS/2 site. Is there any extra service OS2.ORG was providing appart from the OS/2 news? I think that we can build something similar to the Software Updates they had on OS2.org too. It used to be a big help on what fixpacks do I have to install for a Warp version or the several TCPIP versions. Martin |

Hi, even if it is no real replacement for OS2.ORG... this information is available as well if you want to visit Oliver Rick's "warpupdates" site at... http://www.warpupdates.mynetcologne.de/english/site_contents.html Cheers Thomas |

We used the calender to organize the user meetings in Hannover. Especially the location where it takes place as the date is always the third tuesday. I don't have an own website and anyway, it's much simpler to have a single URL for all those events. Do you know of a free calender service somewhere? And I heard from other people that they found the helpdesk quite usefull. Bye, Vitus |

| Find me a script that works and that people would like to use and I'll install it. As well it would be great to have a person to handle the updates of events etc. I'm open for suggestions. If the script is Perl or PHP based doesn't matter but I prefer PHP. And as well if there is need for backend database that is no problem either since we are using MySQL. Let me know if you find something. Post a url to an installation that we can check and see how it works. Or even better, what about lifting over the os2.org calender to OS2 World ? All the jobb would be done then. /Kim |

PS One could always start a discussion group at http://groups.yahoo.com (or some similar group) where one could announce an event and it would be delivered to the members e-mail (just a thought).

I would prefer something much simpler than a forum. It has to be readable for someone only capable of understanding german (in our case). Outdated events should be removed. And we need something which provides a chronological view. A simple list would be enough: 20.5. Stammtisch Hannover (more) 23.5. 19:30 Kerstins Geburtstag (more) 35.5. Erich Kästner-Feier (more) A forum does provide a chronological view of the news posted but not of the events itself. > PS One could always start a discussion group at > http://groups.yahoo.com (or some similar group) > where one could announce an event and it would > be delivered to the members e-mail (just a thought). I'm already mailing those who gave me their address. So regular guests get a notification. Others won't. And one mailing list for all is not a good idea: to which members do you send a note about a meeting in Atlanta? To Hannover/Germany? Certainly not! They won't understand it (it's not german) and once they received 20 mails about events not in their area they will unsubscribe. Let the mailing be done at a local level. We need something per continent where one search for events unknown to him.And we need it fast as it has to be posted to os2.org before it shuts done. Vitus |
