1. No 'built-in' Screensaver ?

I always wondered why there isn't a screen saver built into Warp. Screen savers are okay but can be annoying. I am asking out of curiousity. I have been told about a 'lock' feature in Warp but I don't think it is the same thing. I am talking about a screensaver like the ones found at http://www.screensavershot.com .

PS I have found a program that enables desktop themes to be used with Warp. I think it was at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu . The themes are like the ones at http://www.topthemes.com but I have not used either on Warp, yet (one day will try it).

Well, the screen saver in Warp is the Screen Lockup feature. But, okey if you want a more animated screensaver such available in Win 9x > XP I you have to install 3rd party software. But, I guess that one reason why there hasn't been much done for OS2 (well, there are actually a couple of nice screen savers available) is that it takes CPU. And if you have a system that needs as much of the CPU itself you don't want to run a too CPU heavy screen saver. I've seen many times (during the NT 3.51/4) that people complained about server performance. Problem was that they had enabled any of Microsofts screens savers and that doesn't come for free when we are talking about CPU.

I have noticed that the win stuff runs better when the screen saver is turned off. It also runs better when one uses a regular wallpaper instead of some memory hogg hi-ress photo. Thanks for the information. I think there some 'screensavers' for OS/2 at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu and other places.

A really cool screen saver for OS2 is Escape GL made by SnowStorm Software. Has some really nice gfx modes, but beware some of them will take command of every single cpu cycle you have in your system.

There is a 'contact' portion of the http://www.snowstormsoftware.com site. I sent them an e-mail asking if they still support the Escape GL screensaver for OS/2. I will return with the reply if/when they send it.

How did you like the EscapeGL? Guess it's the closest one you can get if you want to have a gfx based saver.

The reply that I got from Snow Storm Software was that they no longer support OS/2. They said they don't support it since there were those who gave out illegal copies of it. I had referred to the discussion here at http://www.os2world.com and they did not care for some of the remarks. I replied that there are Windows users who make illegal copies too (it is not limited to one group of users of a certain os).

I have not tried the program from http://hobbes.nmsu.edu (I have not tried any of the screensavers, yet).

Thats really bad since I first time heard of it via Martin when we got sponsors to the first OS2 World Award. We also got a licens test and use. I haven't really used it since I really don't have any use for a screen saver. But, would I choose ine I would choose EscapeGL since that it's really nice If they now thinks it's a dead products why not ask them to give it out for free then? Heck, let people download from either Hobbes or from OS2 World (that could be a nice campaign). we could see how many that actually downloaded it. See if you can get them to agree on that. Either with a registration code that is made out for OS2 World and can be used for everybody. No support etc. But, could be that they got a enormous feedback and might even started to develop it again.

I will send another e-mail asking if they will either open source it or give it out free (like at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu or http://www.os2site.com or http://www.os2bbs.com ). I have a feeling it will be negative but I will never know if I don't ask.

PS They did not care that you attached their program to be downloaded. I did not notice the attachement until just today (10-07-2002).

Well, you still need a serial number to get it to work fully.

I will give the other screen savers at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu a try instead. Since I am no real need of one, it might be awhile before I do.
