1. Bootup, not from Hard disk
Reply to this topic with quote Modify your message
Hi,
I'm halfway round the world from home, and can't boot eCS from hard disk because I apparently removed the wrong copy of acpi from it, and I don't have the install cd with me.

My laptop has no floppy drive, else I would just d/l the floppy images and start on those to correct the problem. Various HPFS drivers don't work in Windows XP.

Anybody got any ideas on what I can do now? Help!

You seem to be stuck. I am not an expert on notebooks but I suppose you cannot get even the command line from your OS/2, there would be no problem otherwise.
Winblows do not know HPFS (it's a principle) and I am not sure whether there exists a HPFS driver for winblows (it is possible but note that the driver must not be "read only"). Try unix, I think you will have a better chance. There exists a DOS HPFS driver but it is read only.

Thanks Radek - as you say, I'm stuck. I'd rather not use Linx etc (install, find HPFS driver...). It caused me all sorts of grief around Christmas and I got rid of it.

hi!
perhaps you can download image of ecs 1.2 live cd and boot it up to get access to hpfs drives... on fast connection you could do it in less than hour - and what is more important you can do it under windose (download , burn with nero for example)

Good idea but do not forget to re-download your registration key as well I am almost sure the key lies somewhere near to the installation CD...

I don't think that will work. The eCS "Live" CD will boot to a working OS, but it will not let you make any modifcations to existing hard drives. So you could boot to ECS, but you wouldn't be able to make any changes to your hard drive.

I have found something for stv: a read-WRITE! HPFS driver for DOS (!?)

I've never seen it before so that I cannot tell whether it works and how. If you want to find the driver then search hpfsa.zip and hpfsacc.zip files using Google. I have downloaded the driver so that you can send an email to me, too.
The driver is a shareware but it should function enough long for solving your problem.

What about booting with DFSee? I am not very much used in working with it. Maybe somebody else could say if editing your config.sys is possible under a booted DFSee.
Good Luck.

Download a Linux live CD such as Ubuntu or Knoppix (v3 CDs seemed to work better for me). They will usually find and mount the HPFS partition as readonly. They'll handle JFS too. Boot off of that and mount the HPFS filesystem as R/W (you'll have to read the docs). This will give you access to your config.sys to REM out any errent lines or point paths to the correct driver locations.

Good list of Linux Live CDs:

Thankyou all for the suggestions. Re Linux, Ubuntu doesn't seem to see HPFS without a lot of heartache - maybe I'll try knoppix... The HPFSa driver for DOS - I'm sure I had that many moons ago, and found it again yesterday. I can't get it to work under XP, and I couldn't boot DOS without a floppy drive (could I?).

You can download a cdrom iso from freedos.com to boot to dos, but I'm not sure if freedos can see fat32 ntfs etc. Otherwise you might have to make a cd of any utils you might need.

You can. You can even have a bootable DOS flash disk. But it is not a single step operation. You can find more, for example, on www.nu2.nu/bootcd.

The simplest way is getting a DOS ISO image (for example, from www.bootdisk.com) and patching it. Do not use WinISO, use UltraISO (www.ezbsystems/ultraiso) instead.
UltraISO is a "free trial" paid software. I don't know what the "free trial" will allow you but let's hope it will allow you enough.

OOOOOh. I must try that tomorrow - I wasn't impressed with Freedos today, the cdimage wouldn't boot properly for me.

Success! Tomas' suggestion that I look up a previous help item led to an OS/2 boot disk which worked faultlessly once I had downloaded it (4 attempts, due to power cuts).

Thanks all for your help

Hello,
I had a similar problem after I upgraded to a Athlon64 Mainboard. The system hung up when loading the ACPI-Driver. The solution was booting my knoppix 3.4 CD, then I remounted the HPFS Volume R/W and copied the patched ACPI-Driver from USB-Stick into the \os2\boot directory. After this, the system came up as usual. I hope, this helps.
kind regards,
Martin

Hi.
Yes, once I successfully booted, I deleted the old acpi files, re-copied the new ones into place, double-checked I hadn't muddled anything up, then rebooted from hard disk. Happily it worked. Now all I have to do is find time to work out how to use acpi to eg. power down, tweak cpu speed (I saw a demo app recently that does this - must try...)

Cheers
Steve

Hi Cybermanic,
I just tried again and it worked for me (using a different network etc. etc.). Could it be that it was down or heavily loaded yesterday?
