last updated at 11 Apr, 2006 01:42 (1 times) As I've just seen that there have been two sponsors for Skype.I know it might be nice for some people to have Skype on OS/2 but there are at least three reasons this will not happen or hopefully will not happen: 1.) Skype is closed source (available Linux version != open source) From what should we compile it? Best chance may be Odin to get the Windows version up and running. 2.) Skype is not using open standards like SIP for example 3.) Skype binary is encrypted and Skype checks for a debugger in memory to prevent reverse engineering when running. More information on 3.) can be found at the paper from 2004 by the Columbia university (http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~library/TR-repository/reports/reports-2004/cucs-039-04.pdf) and this one called "The needle in the Skype" from 2006 by two guys working for EADS (http://www.secdev.org/conf/skype_BHEU06.handout.pdf) that looked under the hood of Skype and presented the details on the Back-Hat-Converence. All in all the money is much better placed at the OpenWengo bounty as that would use VoIP standards like SIP, is OpenSource Software and most of the related libs have already been ported to OS/2. We all know we only have very limited developer resources so it might be better to discuss something before adding a bounty that has the tendency to be never done or is even undoable (like I think Skype is). | I agree. Forget Skype, some of the initiatives might be a better bet. I think it is also worth taking a look at GoogleTalk. Google has generally been known for open standards. The text-chat portion of Google Talk already works within Seamonkey (as part of GMail), so that must be plain Javascript/HTML type applicaiton. FYI, we used to use Skype, but soon switched to Googletalk since it performed much better. |

Well I think it would be nice to have Skype for OS/2, but I think the Skype company itself could port it to eComStation. That shouldn't be a big deal for them I guess. I've mailed there development department , like I guess several of us have done and pointed out that we are quite a lot of potential users. That would be a further step for them to show that Skype is for all people. Anyway I got a polite reply that they will consider it for further releases. Not so much to hope for, of course, but the more people requesting it, the bigger chance I guess.

| Well, I can always set up a form that people can fill in to request a release for OS2 version. Kind of petition, but that the form send the request directly to Skype. If you have the proper e-mail and suggestion of what should be sent to them (text/email) I'll set it up during the next days. /Kim |

Good idea! This is what I sent to them, and with some changes it could do?"Did you know that there is a quite big group of potential users of Skype out there? The OS/2 community is still alive (and very active) and probably growing, with both company users and private users. The OS/2 oem version eComStation, which is the OS/2 sucessor, is soon in version 2.0 and it is now an OS that is very up-to-date and supports most new hardware. So my suggestion is that you port Skype to eComStation and even more broaden your compability. The producer of eComStation is Serenity Systems and the eComStation home page is http://www.ecomstation.com. Os2world-http://www.os2world.com is the number one community newsboard. Please consider my suggestion. I have very good experience of Skype on Windows, but I would prefere to use my own choice OS. Thank you! " Email is support@skype.net and subject should be "suggestions" to come to the right departement. Though I sent it through their forms and had to fill in my skype username, but this is the email adress from where I got the answer.

| I don't think there is a non-Windows version of the FULL GoogleTalk right now. In order to use GoogleTalk with browser, you have to have a GMail ID. To use just the text-chat version of GoogleTalk with Seamonkey, (and here's the beauty of many of Google's stuff) you do .... nothing extra. Once you log into GMail, you have the option to turn on the GoogleTalk (text-chat) and your contacts appears as a sidebar item. The chat window can be made into a separate "popup" window if you prefer. I use only OS/2 at home, I've no problem looking at the status of my contacts or sending/receiving text-chats. (And no, it's not slow as far as I can tell). The only thing missing is Voice chat....but I'd be mightily impressed if they could do that through the browser. |

last updated at 18 Apr, 2006 20:50 (1 times) Another and more promising client to port (Wel IMO), than Skype, would be OpenWengo, it is OpenSource, uses the SIP protocol and already has clients for MS-Windows, GNU/Linux, MacOSX.Also WengoPhone (Softphone) is to be found as a Firefox extention (Again MS_Windows, GNU/Linux and MacOS X is supported). |

| Guess that most of you have taken notice of the info posted Charlie Paglee blog about reverse engineering of Skype; so lets see what this opens up for us when it comes to Skype for OS2. |
