| USB and TPad A21m Hardware: Software: (partial config.sys) UHC1 Compliant USB Host Controller IRQ 11 No EHCI controller detected Note:The Thumbdrive (above) works ok on 3 other computers I have. After inserting the thumbdrive in the USB slot, the thumbdrive flashes shortly for one burst. This thumbdrive flashes shortly for one burst, slight pause, then flashes shortly for a 2nd burst on my other computers. The thumbdrive does not show up in the drives folder. Clicking on refresh removable media has no effect. Anyone have possible solution? |

| I have a Thinkpad A22m with a similar problem. It has a single USB port in back. I installed the lates USB drivers (from http://www.ecomstation.com ). It has eComStation 1.2 on it. I have checked the bios but there seems to be no mention of an USB port. I did you what you did; click refresh removeable media. It too had no affect on it. I will look for a possible bios upgrade or utility for it from either IBM or Lenovo.

| I had previously tried those sites but didn't find anything related to USB drivers. The solution to the problem may not be drivers but "technique" in the config.sys. |

| I did not find any mention of an USB port in the bios/cmos settings (there was a mention of a serial port; enabling it stalled the booting of the Thinpad). I had thought perhaps a newer or refreshed bios might show an USB port setting.

| Folks, just for collecting more clues about the situation: The first thing I would do in that case is to boot up eCS with the stick already attached. Does it show up in the drives folder then? Next: Regardless of step one - start LVM (or LVMGUI) and see if it complains about a drive... that would at least mean that it was "detected". Next: You say it works on 3 other computers... is any of them running eCS/Warp? If not: Probably the thumbdrive is formatted with a file system that your eCS doesn't understand - like FAT32 with no FAT32.IFS installed on your machine or NTFS... Last question: HTH Greetings |

| When computer is booted up with eCS and stick inserted, it does not show up in the drives folder. Using LVMGUI it does not complain about a drive. Other 3 computers are running eCS. 2 are dual boot with w98. 1 is dual boot with XPPro. TP has ONE USB slot. The Hardware Manager shows only 1 controller. |

| in my cases, a resource conflict exists; typically a shared irq which the usb driver can't handle. warpcafe has the right testing idea except that i'd boot using the installation disks like i did on my ecs2.0beta pentiumD test bed. no drivers for other devices will have been loaded. |

| I checked the Hardware Manager and IRQ 11 is used by: A. Sound Fusion CS46xx B. UHCI Controller Could this be a problem and if so, how to fix same? |

| Further snooping! I rem'd out the audio lines in config.sys, checked to make sure IRQ 11 was not being used after a re-boot. IRQ 11 shows as being used ONLY by the UHCI controller. Stick is still not recognized. |

| try turning off audio support in bios. cardbus can be an issue. also is a nic in the system? the hardware manager will not report the irq used for most drivers. the hardware manager does not report if the video adapter is using an irq or not. if adjustable in bios, i set mine to off. i have this problem also with my tp770x; but, the system is too complicated for me to reload it at this time. thus i don't know exactly why this system doesn't work i'd still just boot to the install cdrom and see if it works there. i am out of suggestions. |

| No NIC in the system. During the boot-up screen, the video is stated to be using IRQ11. I changed (in bios) the IRQ for the UHC1 Controller to IRQ 5. Stick still a NoShow in the Drives Icon. Still looking......... Appreciate everyones input. |

| Hi everyone, woohoo - this seems to become a busy thread. Great. From my experience I know that one should NOT try to run USB controller "irq-free" which is possible with most BIOSes, because OS/2 and eCS won't be able to use it. But you didn't do that - so this is just for information purpose... The question now is, how to assign a unique IRQ to the USB controllers and to find out in reverse: Which ones are used?Another hint from zman is indeed inportant: The hardware manager is not perfect! Many drivers are not "hwmanager-aware" so that it cannot display resources used by them. The best method for that is Veit Kannegiesser's pci...vk (on hobbes; the ... stands for the version number). That is a must-have for all "hardware fiddlers" on OS/2+eCS. Here' sthe link: Oh, yes... one thing: I saw that your thinkpad apparently has not "EHCI" controller... which means in return that it has no USB2.0-capable controller. Hmm... is that thumbdrive a 2.0 device and possibly not downwards compatible? Greetings |

| Yes, I had an option of running the USB Controller "irq-free" (in bios) but did not try that scenario. Thanks for the "heads up" on that aspect. I haven't downloaded the pci..vk yet but will do so. The stick works in 2 other non EHCI computers and 1 with EHCI. That rules out the 2.0 backwards compatibility. Plus, I have a Kodak card reader (cameras) and an Epson 1670 scanner that both work in the 2 non EHCI computers (using eCS). None of them work in the A21m TPad. Onwards! |

| Latest "experimentation" and digging for USB functionality. The stick Works OK if the eCS demo cd is used. I copied the config.x while using the eCS demo. I will attempt to compare my config.sys with the config.x and find the "problem". |

| With my A22m, it does not see the 64 meg USB drive. The 64 meg USB drive works with my T23. I will try USB resource manager. With my T23, I tried my USB007 drive. It is 512 meg in size. My T23 does not see it (I tried USB resource manager and it sees no drive). It works with my Win Gateway 200s.

| I am in the process of comparing the DemoCD (config.x-it is called) and the "normal" booted 1.25 system config.sys. The comparison is much like apples and oranges and not what one would call straight-forward. As one example the config.x uses USBD /I13 in it. Using this causes the TP to freeze on boot. Still looking.......Mayhaps eCS 2.0 (future) will solve all. Again, many thanks for your input(s). |

Hi Maybe this USB configuration tool will help with whatever problems you are finding - a lot of USB problems seem to be down to configuration issues. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/USBcfgb6.zip It comes with a useable Help file which will tell you that the USBD.SYS I13 switch So, if not booting from USB floppy no need for that switch - in theory Regards Pete |

| Success! I performed a complete NEW install, including formatting. After the install, I made the necessary changes to the config.sys for the USB components, rebooted. Stick IS recognized and all works. Now to sneak up on any new additions to the operating system and watch out for problems that upset all. I had previously used many of the embellishments using the eCS Maintenance Tool. Almost afraid to "upset the applecart". Many thanks to everyone who offered assistance. |

| Bobber, although I'm glad to see the problems solved... I still am not sure about what the cause was. Was it some kind of "configuration mess" or what? It leaves me with some dull feeling of being still somehow "helpless"... Never mind anyway. Greetings |

I wonder if... I'll take a guess on a possible cause: On an eCS1.2R (or is it MR?) system that had been "migrated" from eCS1.1 USB seemed to be working fine, mouse printer and cardreader all working. Then I attached a USB scanner which is working fine on 2 almost identical systems and tried to scan using Tame/2 - Yes, Tame is setup fine. The result of trying to scan was a complete system lockup requiring a press of the Reset button. Knowing that the USB drivers were up to date, setup as correctly as possible and that Tame should work with the Canon LiDE20 scanner - does on 2 other 1.2R systems here - I started looking for a "culprit"... As an aside: This "investigative behaviour" is probably a result of developing the USBcfg app - I am trying to collate odd bits of USB setup data and problem resolution into an FAQ for addition to the Help file at some point. End aside. As usbresmg.sys is also present on the system I had not installed the Tame/2 supplied version and realised that I had not checked what version was present - took it for granted that a migrate install would automatically install a later version. Checking [BootDrive]:\ecs\boot\usbresmg.sys against versions installed on the 2 other systems and against the version supplied with Tame/2 (same as eCS) revealed that the migrate install had *Not* updated that file. Updating to the current version resolved the issue. I suspect that the problem experienced by Bobber could well be the same as the above: especially as a fresh install seems to have "cured" it. Regards Pete |

| I really did Not want to do a fresh install but, I felt I had exhausted all efforts known to me (mostly results of input from readers of this post). A "last ditch" effort of sorts-(fresh install). Prior to checking the USB functionality, I had downloaded Many "updates" using the eCS Maintenance Tool. This could have been the "culprit". |

| Folks, thanks for your feedback. I'm gonna file that as "messed up configuration" but it's good to know the symptoms that it can cause. Pete, thanks also for the hints involved with "migrating" - that's something I'm about to have to do on one of my machines and now I feel "prepared" ...to some extent. Greetings |
