There are external cd-rom drives that connect via a PCMCIA card. Will they work with OS/2? Does it need special drivers in addition to the PCMCIA driver?

Well, IBM used to have pcmcia/pcard based drives, but I could find them anymore. Good part was that there was OS2 drivers for them as well. Closest that I can find now are IBM USB 10X Portable CD-ROM and it goes for $239.00 USD. The partnumber is 33L5151.

More information about this drive can be found at:

http://commerce.www.ibm.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce/ProductDisplay?cntrfnbr=1&prmenbr=1&prnbr=33L5151&cntry=840&lang=en_US

But, then again... USB and driver problem... but who knows if You get USB to run it might work out.

Thanks for the information. Have you seen any relative inexpensive cd-rom drives that connect via the pcmcia/pc-card port?

PS I have seen both a pcmcia/pc-card and a PCI USB card that is version 1.1 (UHCI?) at Tiger Direct (http://www.tigerdirect.com) for $24. Is this the one that has the UHCI support? uses the OS/2 UHCI drivers?

I have tried updating the pcmcia drivers and the ide drivers (the latest ones from IBM). The pcmcia detect software (comes with Warp ver 3) shows the cd as memory - before it showed it as a hard drive that was not ready. In the drives section, it has two odd icons that show it as d: and e: (both cause a 'not ready' error when either clicked on or when I try to access its properties). I have tried to install Warp ver 4 but it does not see the cd-rom drive at all.

PS I will try downloading the pccard source code from the DDK section of the IBM web site.

Are you using the PC-Card software available via Software Choice I think that you might be able to do the trick with that!

I am unable (presently) to afford the cost/price of the subscription to Software Choice. I am trying the programs/drivers that is available for Warp that is still for free.

I have downloaded the latest version of idedasd.exe from the IBM website. I will give it a try.

I have also downloaded the pccard source code from DDK. I will give it a try even though I am not really a programmer. It will definitely be a learning experience.

Through the plugnplay feature of the pcmcia icon in the system setup, I found that the external drive is a Shining device. IBM has a driver for it at their site for OS/2. I download it and installed it using device driver install. When I rebooted, it had trap errors. Utility diskettes did work in getting it to boot. I turned off the external drive but it still would not boot. I unplugged the external drive pcmcia card and it would boot normally even though the drivers for Shining still loaded. After it had booted, it plugged in and turned on the external drive. It was still seen as a hard drive but it was now 'ready' as opposed to 'not ready' before (it saw my moden card as an i/o card). I will keep working on it.

I added the os2cdrom.dmd and cdfs.ifs to the config.sys. I connect and turn on the external drive. The notebook computer boots to a trap error. I tried two different cd drives; a Mitsumi and an IBM. The trap error occured for both of them. It is only when I unplug the pcmcia that the trap error does not occur. I used the citirom driver from the IBM site. Before that, it would only see the drive as a hard drive but not ready but it did not cause a trap error. It could be the driver from Shining that causes the trap error by assigning an irq that already is being used. Shining no longer (or never really did) support OS/2 (no Warp drivers found at http://www.shining.com ). I will either find a way around it or use another external drive case or cd drive.
