| Is XFree86 worthe installing? Does it improve OS/2 enough to do? What is your opinion of XFree86.

| Well, as maintainer of "The X11 Files" I am a bit baised. But anyway: Yes, it's worth it. There are quite some applications that simply put their PM counterparts to shame. Think of The GIMP, xchat, LyX or Dia. There are also some pretty cool games like FreeCiv, the Civilization clone. But that's only one side of XFree86/OS2. It is far more. It's a *mighty* tool. You can connect to any Unix (meaning all derivatives like Solaris and Linux, too) box and start a program on it while it displays its user interface for you to interact with on your OS/2 machine. Imagine working with stuff on the Unix machine in Australia when you are in France. Cool, eh? |

| Same question here! I've looked brief at XFree86 and I usually just think that it takes to long time to go though all the documention. Also there is shit load of files that has to be downloaded as well and it is a bit hard to figure out what to download. Recommendation would be if someone could make a WarpIn file. This would really boost the installation base of XFree86! /Kim |

There seems to be no order or plan for the XFree86 files. I found there isn't a way to easily install it onto my computer. I agree that a warpin version would greatly simplify the installation of XFree86. It could be a 'netlabs' type project for some enterprising Warp programmer to do.

| Hmm.. problem is that there is no good forum except for Netlabs to make suggetions to. But, then again it would be nice to have a "What I would See in the Future" list regarding OS2. If one should be set up how would it then be defined? /Kim |

There is a Yahoo.com group for project suggestions for Netlabs. I believe the url is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/os2-netlabs . I will post the 'warpin version of XFree86' there.

| Hmm I saw Timur Tabis answer on your request: I was working on that, but it's difficult. WarpIN is missing some features that would handle the inter-relationships between the different modules. Let's hope that Timur figures this one out together with WarpIn developers. Okey, I mean getting XFree86 installed is possible. But I know a few people that have tried and gave up since they just couldn't get to work and that they had trouble pick the correct or needed files for the installation. /Kim |

| I also saw the reply by Timur. There was also a reply by another person too but it was more of a 'help to install XFree86' type of thing. I also hope he figures out how to do it. I tried installing XFree86 but I was not sure how to do it. I have the cd's with the files but I am not sure what to install. OS/2 Warp-ed to the very end. |

See http://www.os2world.com/os2files/index_e.html and select "Installation" from the "The X11 Files" section. |

| But, it's so damn many files here and there to be downloaded! Could not someone make a full archive with all the files need and even preinstalled, ie meaning then that the proper files are installed into lets say /xfreeos2 and then just what is need from the users to be configed when it comes to config.sys and proper *.sys files added and choice of gfx card. This would at least make me to want to install it. Following me? /Kim |

| I follow you Kim. Perhaps someone could create a Warp-In archive to automate the install process. Of course, making that statement begs the question: "Why don't I make the Warp-In archive and offer it to the OS/2 community?" Unfortunately, there is not an X Server that will work with my graphics card, so there would be no way for me to test my creation to make sure it would do a proper install. I guess an alternative would be one of the pre-packaged CD's I've seen advertised at the OS/2 Supersite. I'm not sure if they include any kind of install routine or if you still have to manually unzip the files and modify the config.sys. JasonL |

I have heard that there is some one working on a WarpIn version of an XFree86 installation (or at least the basic parts). I will have to check to see who or where the information came from. ![]() BigWarpGuy OS/2 Warp-ed to the very end. |

Please note that the new release is alpha-quality. It's even harder to configure, since it doesn't really come with any configuration utility. A way to get basic configuration is described in the included how-to, but you will most probably need to copy over some stuff from your older, working XFree86Config file. That said, it's working quite well here with my Matrox G400 card. |
