I downloaded and 'installed' and played 'Tunnell Wars from the OS/2 Games page (hosted by OS/2 World). It has great grraphics. It is fun to play - for awhile. The background gets a little tiresome since it goes by so fast (I have a 700 mhz cpu and high graphics setting and 256 meg ram). It does not seem to end. My 'guy' gets destroyed and the 'enemy' is destroyed repeatedly but nothing really happens (no 'end of game', just accumulation of points). Is this all there is to the game? Is it a demostration of DIVE (there is a separate 'window' for DIVE settings [?]). Does anyone know more about it?

I don't think I ever saw the download though I used to know the homepage., though now it is forgotten to me. I don't believe the game was ever finished but I seem to recall that there was source available but my memory is foggy on it.

IIRC, the author said that the 'Tunnel Wars' was a project to show OS/2's strengths as a viable gaming platform. He said it uses THREADs for everything - each bullet has its own thread (which was another concept he wanted to prove, massively threadded games) and DIVE for fast impressive graphics. It was never completed however... I think he proved his point and moved on.
There should be a README file with the download where he talks about this.

It shows OS/2's strengths quite well. It is a shame it was never finished. It would probably have been an awesome game.

Thanks for the information.

It has a link to the developers web site where one can download not only the game but also the source code (so any intereprising Warp programmer can create a game from it?).

PS There is also a link to a book about tips and tricks for programmers of games (in C?).

The main web site is at:

http://www.ratajik.net/TunnelWars/

There's also a bunch of old OS/2 stuff at http://www.ratajik.com under the OS/2 menu.

Some info about the game is at: http://www.ratajik.net/TunnelWars/About.htm There's also Parallax demo at http://www.ratajik.net/OS2/Release/parallax.zip

And no, there's no end to the game, sadly enough. I had a blast writing it, and the engine is very generic (very easy to add new weapons, enemies, sounds, whatever). After I left Boca (I was a lead on the OS/2 Warp team), I drifted off into the Windows world and haven't ever returned.

Any good OS/2 emulators that can be run under windows? I'd like to finish the game, just don't have any OS/2 boxes laying about anymore

Oh, and sorry about the speed thing. It was originall written on a 66DX2, or something like that. It would be pretty simple to slow down the scrolling based on CPU/Graphics performance Specifically, I'd try slowing how fast the scrolling works. Check in video.c, SpriteMove:

USHORT usSpeed = 1;

I believe making usSpeed negative will slow it down.

Or, on line 377:

lIndexLayer1 += 27 + usSpeed;

Playing with the 27 might work. Or I may also be 100% mis-remembering

On looking at the code, it looks like there's some user control over how quick the video layer processes (specifically, it uses the g_usGraphicTime variable, which I believe is set by the "Adjust" dialog.) Increasing the number should slow everything down for faster machines.

Sorry I can't test this or give more info, but I don't have a machine that it can run on

Thanks for the information. It is very informative.

There is also a game at the site where Tunnell Wars is mentioned called Diver(?). I clicked on the link but it just goes to the Tunnell Wars page. Does anyone have more information on it?

Thanks for clearing that up.

Parallax seems to be a scrolling test/demo. It is neat that scrolls at different levels (kinda fast on my computer).

Yeah, I'd love to play with it on a fast machine. With that many layers on a DX2, it kinda sucked.

The only one I know is Virtual PC. It is a bit pricey, i.e. you could buy a Lindows box from walmart for about the same price. Bochs would probably work but I haven't tried it and it is much slower.
