When using PHP-scripts and if one wants to keep the file sufix *.html or *.shtml instead of using *.php. How do you config Apache to handle that?

Questions is how do I config Apache to run the php-code when using *.html instead of *.php as file sufix? I've looked around in httpd.conf and php config files I cant find anything that would make this possible. But, it is possible! But, How?!
I've tried to add following handler to httpd.conf:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .html

and that didn't make any different. Also got suggestions to update .htaccess with following:

RemoveHandler .html
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html

I that didn't work either. It might be that above suggestions should work out, the question is what else have I missed out?
