Whats your definition of affordable? I bought a HP 2550L New in the Box at eBay for $350 about a year ago. They can be had at this time for about $150. If prints very nice. I use the HP 4550 drivers and have not encountered any printing problems at all. The only thing I dread is buying the next set of toner carts, which will run about $250 for all 4. cheers, |

Initially I was referring to the intiail cost when purchasing it; below $500. With the cost of toner cartridges, what one saves initially one spends in the long run. With the cost of toner cartridges. perhaps the printer companies could (almost) give away their printers and make money from selling cartridges(?).

I believe that printers, especially low end inkjet, have been moving to the razor blade marketting model for years. Since they actually have some value, they just can't justify giving them away, but its darn close. I was shopping for an inexpensive color inkjet printer about 3 years ago. I came across a LexMark for $25, but on reading the box I found that it came with NO Ink. Walked across the store to the ink section and found out that 1 b/w and 1 color would add another $75 to the price. I bought an HP instead for $80 cause it came with ink. |

last updated at 12 Jul, 2006 16:09 (1 times) Well, prices has gone down and here in Sweden one can get the HP 2600N for around 450 USD - so guess that you guys in the states can take off 100 USD. But, then there is the toner costs; 1 black (2500 pages) and 3 colours (2000 pages) that gives a total toner cost around 400 USD. So that gives around 20 cent per page + paper cost.I'm currently using 2 HP Business Deskjet 2800 A3 printers (ink) to print lots of printing material in low volumes (meaning that it would be to expensice to use a print shop). But to well over half of the cost as of the HP 2600N. But, it all comes down to what you expect to use the printer for. But, I would think that I will in the near future get a colour laser as well; but for now I haven't really any use for it since I've print mostly lots of black and white documents (using HP 1320). |

The problem I have is that I print very, very rarely. I have never used up an inkjet cartridge... they are mostly full when they dry out to the point that when I next try to use it I can seldom even soak them and get another print out of them. I am looking at laser hoping that it will be less likely to dry out on me. That also means, however, that the initial cost for so few prints will be a huge impact on the total cost of prints. If I can get a multifunction (which I have seen some around 150 US but no driver that would work on OS/2) where I could use it as a copier, fax, scanner, and printer would make the cost more affordable. BigWarpGuy (02 Jul, 2006 22:54): Are there any affordable color laser printers that work with eComStation? Are there any recomendations?
Good evening! I recently a purchased a Dell 3100cn. It is an above average printer when used with eCS. I evaluated the following printers that supported Postscript or PCL: Brother HL-2700CN Dell 3100cn Lexmark C510 Minolta 2450 OkidataC5400 Samsung CLP-550 My priorities were initial cost, cost of consumables, duplexing, and a 500 sheet paper tray. Only the Dell and Samsung had the best combination of costs for these items. I selected the Dell because the Samsung's integrated duplexer was offset by the high cost of consumables (toner, fuser, waste tank, photo/transfer unit). The only drawbacks to the Dell during setup and use are: The PPD file must be modified to include a Job Control Language section. The Accept button on the display must be pressed twice whenever the manual paper feed is used. The paper guides on the manual paper feed must be adjusted when switching between paper and envelopes because the form must be centered on the feed tray. Currently, you can purchase a factory refurbished 3100cn with a one year warranty from the Dell Outlet for $300.00 U.S. I recommend an upgrade to the 64Mb memory if you intend to print any color images at the high quality setting. Kingston and Crucial both sell memory modules for this printer. Have a safe and joyous day! Good morning!
I really can't answer that question since the issues of size, consumables, location of the manual feed slot, how trays are loaded, etc. will be unique to your requirements. Here is list of color printers, with approximate costs, that I evaluated: Brother Dell Lexmark Minolta Okidata Samsung HL-2700CN 3100CN C510 2450 C5400 CLP550Base $460 $400 $430 $642 $800 $559 Duplex 782 300 565 369 295 Included unit 500 439 230 424 277 430 278 sheet tray Black .013 .011 .016 .018 .008 .013 per pg. /.019 Color .019 .024 .030 .027 .023 .021 per pg. /.035 /.045 Drum 170 138 84 x 4 # of (42K) (45K (15K) pages /12K) Fuser 423 225 140 140 (60K) (51K) (50K /12K) Waste 10 5 19 tank (12K) (12K) (12K /3K) Photo / 369 196 199 140 transfer (60K) (40K) (50K unit /12K)
The prices were collected about 6 months ago using the best prices available from the Manufacturer, Pricewatch.com, or Epinions.com. Dual per page costs have been listed where per page cost is dependent on the size of the consumable. The dual per page counts, such as 50K/12K, are listed where the use of the item, such as a fuser, is dependent on whether you are using black or color in the prints. I was unable to find any page counts for the Okidata fuser and photo units. I have read postings that the Brother, Okidata, and Samsung units have been successfully used with eCS or OS/2. The HP 2605 Color Laser and 2820 All In One Color Laser are also supposed to support PC6 and Postscript. I also recommend that you read any available reviews on the printers from CNet.com http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3155_7-0.html?filter=500172_3809665_500428_31975_&tag=dffl3_1, ZDNet.com http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4566-3159_16-0.html?tag=ont-peri, Epinions.com http://www.epinions.com/Printers--reviews--laser___led--prices--color_printer, etc. Have a joyous day! Gary, out of personal interest - where did you find the information that the Samsung printer supports these languages? AFAIK, it comes with a "proprietary control language"... I was unable to get more information about it. I just want to make sure it can be attached to a Warp machine and has a driver in the OMNI, LJ or PS driver pack that can be used with it... Thomas, The following link provides a list of specifications for the CLP-550. The language options are PCL6 and Postscript 3: http://www.samsung.com/Products/PrinterandMultifunction/DiscontinuedProducts/CLP_550XAA.asp?page=Specifications For the newer Samsung printers, only the CLP-650 supports PCL6 or Postscript 3. The link to the specifications is: http://www.samsung.com/Products/PrinterandMultifunction/ColorLaserPrinters/CLP_650NXAA.asp?page=Specifications You should be able to use either printer as long as you can extract the PPD file from the Windows, Mac, or Linux installations.
