1. OS2 uses incompatible head count when using hard disks on USB |
|
|
| Using USB mounted hard drives is great and this would be a convenient way to create mirror HD's for backup if OS2 didn't insist on using an incompatible head count when used on USB. Removable USB storage devices configured with 255 logical heads; the norm for large HD's on PATA, commonly there configured, then moved to service in an USB enclosure, which windoze correctly handles in all cases (for once they did something correct). Maybe OS2DASD could be provided with a forced head count switch for users who want or need this compatibility? Or does anyone have any other kind of suggestions. |

| Hallo Kim, what is the bldlevel of the os2dasd.dmd you detect the problem? regards Rainer |

| Hi Kim I gave up waiting for OS/2 to work properly with large USB2.0 drives. As my main use for a USB2.0 drive is backups - I note you also have a similar use for these drives - and I do not need the theoretical top speed of USB2.0 I hooked my drive up to a Linksys NSLU2 which makes the drive into network attached storage. No problems with my 250gb USB2.0 drive and OS/2 that way You can find out a bit about the NSLU2 here (if interested):- http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Reviews-155-ProdID-NSLU2.php Regards Pete |

| What read and write transfer rates do you get with the Linksys? How do you set it up? |

Would like to get an indication as well; since I've been waiting for the D-Link unit to arrive, but as for now D-Link don't have any plans to launch this unit in Sweden. So I might look for the LinkSys instead. |

Hallo Kim, with DFSEE for os/2 and for win should document the diffrent geometie handing of the large removable HDD in windows and os2. I have just check the standard start output of dfsee. The geometrie info is part of it. Chould you pass a bug report to eCS to initiate/generate an IBM APAR report by Serenity? This the "offical" way to get the problem solve. The "social engeniering" way is to publish the report in the OS2 bugs news and hope the driver developers get the info via this channel. In the os2.org help forum one user manage to access a large usb hhd by OS/2. I will pass a question to him about the incompatiity. I personal have waited for 7 month for very large removable support in os2dasd.DMD. ( Threat in os2 bugs in june 2004). I have passed the 250 GB extenal USB/Firewire unit to a friend. (so no direct access to test it and generate an report immediately ) kind regards Rainer .

Hi Guys In brief it can be accessed by pointing a browser at the default ip address 192.168.1.77 for Configuration/Administration purposes. Fairly easy to setup and use. Transfer rates are not fantastically fast but fast enough to use as a mapped drive without really waiting for the wps to display contents of directories etc - just about as fast as a slower local drive. My use for this NSLU2/USB2.0 250Gb drive is as a backup device for my 3 PC network and eldest son is into video editing so has taken advantage of the acres of space to store completed work on. Using BackAgain to backup a 1Gb partition to a mapped network drive BA reports an average write speed of 180Mb/Min... As I said, Not fantastically fast for a USB2.0 drive. However, as the drive is not connected to an OS/2 based PC there are no problems with accessing the 250Gb drive. I gather current OS/2 and USB drivers seem to have a limitation (I think 160Gb was mentioned in a newsgroup) when it comes to accessing large USB2 drives. Don't think me rude but rather than me try to review the device here have a look at the link in my previous message. Regards Pete |

| Well, I read the review and it looks like a good buy to be used for a home storage to be used for the daily storage and shuffling smaller files between different system. As mentioned I've been waiting for the D-Link DNS-120 to be launched in Scandinavia, but it seems that D-Link won't sell it here. Either they have had to many problems with it in USA where it first was launched. Also compared with the LinkSys I kind of like the looks better since I just want to wall mount it and that isn't the easiest with the LinkSys I assume? Here is how the D-Link DNS-120 looks like:

The "slug" - as the linux people call it - stands upright and comes with a dinky little stand. Cables plug into the back, the on/off switch is on the front and side mounting it would block the vent system - on 1 side at least. I think the nearest you will get to wall mounting is putting it on a shelf Regards Pete |

Or mounting it to a wal using a bracket/brace that holds just far enough from the wall to allow connections and to allow air to circulate? (just a thought/thinking out loud).
