I've found that on Windows machines trying to network to OS/2, if I use the graphical icon / Network Neighbourhood / "computers near me" / whatever it is called lately - it is about a 50-50 chance that it'll find the OS/2 machine.

However, if I am logged on with a user ID and password that exists on the OS/2 machine, and I use the NET command from the command prompt on the Windows machine, accessing the actual machine name of the OS/2 system, it will almost always find the machine. For example:

NET VIEW \\computername

NET USE x: \\computername\drivesharename

etc

Of course, you also have to be sure the same network protocols are installed on both the Windows and OS/2 systems.

I don't know if this will help, or if you've already tried this. Interestingly, I've found that the command line NET command is also more reliable when Windows machines are talking to other Windows machines then the graphical interface. I don't kinow why this is, but as a result I've pretty much given up on the Windows network GUI stuff and usually just go straight for the command prompt.

Hope this helps

Ahhhhh! Dammit!
That's what I forgot to mention:

The "network neighbourhood browser" service needs to be installed on the OS/2 machine for the Windows "Network Neighbourhood" can see the OS/2 shares!!! (or the respective "computers near me" stuff)
I don't know whether it can still be downloaded at IBM but for those interested, I can send you the stuff.

Greetings
Thomas

Hi Thomas!
I´am using eCS 1.1 with a Hpfs386 package from an OS/2 Server box, as far as I know it is even allowed by IBM to use it on other OS/2 Systems. As far as I know I installed it correctly, because it says at boot up that the filesystem is installed.

Or will there have to be installed other files for using HPFS386 over a Nework ?

Regarding the Shares:
If I access a the eCS Maschine with password or without password configured, I will always get access and will see there shares which I managed, BUT I don´t see the files inside the shares and I also can´t write inside the share if I access it from the windows xp/98 machine. I still get access under the eCS Machine through.

My thought is that it has something to do with the permission rights which I set with the security tab ( tried everything: basic, advanced ... ) under eCS 1.1 or/and with the installation of Hpfs386.

I can allways see the eCS pc over the Windows "Network Neighbourhood" and I´ve also got the "network neighbourhood browser" service installed ( as far as I can remember, is it not installed by default with eCS.)

But the "network neighbourhood browser" service acts kind of strange, it displays my windows computer, even it is not on the network, of course then it can´t be accesed. But there are three identical links to my computer and everytime if it is connected to the network it adds a link and I can´t delete the links. Shares are also displayed more than ones inside the links to the computer.

Hi!

I´ve got it working. There were such small things wrong. But as it sometimes is it can cause big problems.

1. Inside the Hpfs386.ini was no IBMLAN folder specified.
2. The ACL of Drive C: was set to no access.

I always tried to get the permission of the folder C:\ÖffentlOrd right. As I did it in Windows, but I then did not checked the permission of drive c:!

Thanks for you´re help
